Programs for Boy Scouts

Please let me know if there is any interest in these 2 badges. We can do it as a group or in the summer there will be 2 different days offered to earn each badge. Welcome Scouts! Fort Necessity offers both guided and self-guided programs for scouts. If you would like more information or if you would like to make a reservation please call 724-329-8124 or email the staff.   ARCHAEOLOGY MERIT BADGE This guided program meets the requirements of the BSA Archaeology merit badge. The scouts will have a great time learning Archaeology, participating in a mock dig, making a soldier's musket cartridge and studying the French and Indian War soldiers. There is a merit badge counselor on staff to sign the boys' blue cards. The program takes about 5 hours. It is suggested that the scouts do either requirement 4a or requirement 4b before arriving. They will do requirement 4c at Fort Necessity. Likewise it is suggested the scouts complete requirement 5. Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Mount Washington Tavern at Fort Necessity, Johnstown Flood National Memorial, Friendship Hill National Historic Site, Chota Cherokee Town Troops: Dates offered and fees This merit badge program is offered Saturdays in the fall; and Monday through Saturday in the summer. The merit badge program fee is $50 for the first 10 scouts and $5 for each additional scout. Individual Scouts: Dates offered and fees This program will be offered in the summer of 2018. To make a reservation call 724-329-8124 or email here.   INDIAN LORE MERIT BADGE This guided program meets the requirements of the BSA Indian Lore merit badge. The scouts will have a great time learning American Indian games, seeing museum artifacts and exploring the life of 1750s American Indians in western Pennsylvania. Troops: Dates offered and fees This merit badge program is offered Saturdays throughout the year (except mid-April to mid-June); and Monday through Saturday in the summer. To make a reservation call 724-329-8124 or email here.   GEORGE WASHINGTON LEARNING TO BE A LEADER – Historic Patch Program Program length: 3 hours   This program was developed by the National Park Service in cooperation with the Westmoreland-Fayette Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The requirements are designed to help Scouts gain experience and an understanding of the qualities of leadership. The boys and their leader read text, answer questions, and participate in self guided activities all contained in one booklet. The program themes are leadership and stewardship. As the scouts work through the activities to earn "George Washington Learning to be a Leader" patch, they find how young George Washington learned lessons which he used throughout his lifetime as a general and as our first president. At the visitor center each scout can get a booklet and each leader can get a leader's booklet, or you can download and print the scout booklet here and the leader's guide here. The program is free, however, reservations are helpful. Upon completion the scouts may purchase the "George Washington Learning to be a Leader" patch through the Westmoreland-Fayette Council.   THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR IN WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA: 1754-1763 – Historic Patch Program Program length: 5 hours   Patch not yet available The requirements are designed to help Scouts gain experience and an understanding of the scope of the French and Indian War. The boys and their leader read text, answer questions, and participate in self guided activities all contained in one booklet. Participants will complete activities Fort Necessity Visitor Center and Battlefield, Braddock's Grave, and Jumonville Glen. One booklet per scout and one leader's booklet per group will be provided. The program is free, however, reservations are helpful. This patch will be the second in the series and is designed to attach to the "Learning to be a Leader" patch.   Scout Ranger Patch FIND YOUR PARK SCOUT RANGER Boy Scouts can earn the “National Park Service Scout Ranger” certificate or the "Scout Ranger" patch. Participate in 5 hours of organized education activities and/or volunteer service projects to earn the certificate or 10 hours to earn the patch. Scouts can earn their hours at one park or at several. If you live in Western Pennsylvania there is a National Park not too far away.
