PLC,

A couple of thoughts, for what they are worth, on tonight’s prep efforts.

I sent the 2 PDFs that describe how the camporee will run.  You can read them for yourselves, but I believe the gist is that we are expected/encouraged to build a bunch of camp stuff on Saturday.  I don’t see anything that indicates we are supposed to build our sled on site.  (I suspect the attendees would push back pretty hard on that notion, anyway)  Also, there are points for units who cook on fire, with dutches.  Any chance our menus reflected that, or are adaptable to that?

So if you want to get some sled building done, there is no issue with that as far as I can tell.  If that is what you hope to do tonight or tomorrow, you should bring tools and fasteners and whatnot.  There isn’t much of that sort of thing at the Scout Hall.

For stripping and prepping the bamboo, I suspect the best tools for the job will be hatchets or machetes to knock off the little branches.  Or maybe a fine saw would work well?  I’ve never done this job, so I am just guessing, but those are my guesses.  Do your best to bring suitable tools.  Try not to get into the first aid kit :-)

Please make sure that we clean up any mess we make – dispose of cuttings in the dumpster or deep enough in the woods to be (at least mostly) out of sight.

Another suggestion is to bundle up the bamboo that we will take as raw material into 1 or 2 tightly bound bundles.  There are a few straps already around some of it, and we have ropes (purple accessory line?) that will serve that purpose, if you need them.  It will make it easier on Friday.

You’ve probably got additional good ideas.  Do your best to communicate what you need to the folks that are coming.  If you need them to bring something, it seems to be best if they know that before they come :-)

-Derek.

I believe you told me you wanted to meet up tonight and needed the door opened?  Mr. Rouse will be there with the Cubs starting at 6:15, so you’ll have access at that point.  But I don’t want to tell you how to live.  You guys show up when it makes sense for you.

(You probably weren’t asking me, were you :-)

PS: I had an interesting idea for lashing up bamboo: I bet a bit of duct tape would be handy in building some of the more complicated and fussy structures.  Use a thin strip to tape a joint for bit of security before doing a more proper lashing?  IDK if that is a genuinely helpful idea or just an unnecessary step.  Just thinking out loud…

PPS: Straw?

All of the bamboo has been stripped of branches, and strapped up into two piles. I believe we said that the sled would be built earlier on Friday, since we did not have enough time last night to make it. -Ian
