The
Central Florida Council is proud to announce
Jodi Peterman has agreed to serve as the 2014
Popcorn Kernel. This will be Jodi's second
year in serving in this position. She is
the proud mom to three sons and a daughter, who
feature one Eagle Scout, two Life Scouts, three
former Venturers and one future
Venturer!
Jodi
is a leader in Troop and Crew 192, chartered by
the First United Methodist Church of St. Cloud
in the Osceola District. She servesas the
Fundraising Chair for both units.
She
leads the Troop's fundraising efforts with an
eye on the goal and lots of positive
communication, meeting one on one with every
family in the Troop during the popcorn and
discount card campaigns.
Thanks to her leadership,
the Troop sold more than $19,000 in popcorn last
fall. (Wow, right?) So, what's the secret to
their success? Troop 192 was highlighted at the
All Hands Summit in March of 2013. Check it out
here: Troop 192 - how'd they do
it?
Jodi
looks forward to working with our District and
Unit Kernels to ensure success during the "2014
Popcorn = Program" Campaign. As she says in the
video, "we provide our Scouts the opportunity to
go on trips like Philmont, Sea Base and Northern
Tier." Jodi knows it's all about the youth and
their program.
As
you enjoy your summer, here are a couple of tips
from Jodi and the popcorn team:
- Be sure your unit is planning out
their next year
- Figure out all the awesome activities
your youth want to do
- Come up with a unit
budget: here is a helpful tool
- Make sure your unit is committed to
program, by signing your unit up for popcorn.
You can do that here: Popcorn Web Site
- Attend one of the four Area Popcorn
Kickoffs in July (more information to
come)
- Ensure that during this next popcorn
season... it's all about the
program!

What's Going
Around: Swimmer's
Ear |
Splish,
splash, OUCH! Centra Care is warning that
Swimmer's Ear is What's Going Around these
days.
Otitis
Externa (a.k.a. Swimmer's Ear) is a painful
outer ear infection that can develop when water
gets trapped in the ear canal and irritates the
canal.
While
Swimmer's Ear (obviously) occurs frequently
after swimming, Centra Care physicians say that
there are other ways in which it develops. Any
break in that lining of the canal can increase
your risk for infection. Besides swimming, the
bacteria can also develop after bathing or
scratching the ear canal with fingernails.
Irritation can also occur when using
cotton-tipped swabs or ear-buds of an MP3
player. Your earwax actually protects the ear
canal from drying out.
See
a physician if you suspect that you or your
child has Otitis Externa. If it is bacterial in
nature, you will need a
prescription.

From Our Council
President |
I recently accompanied a
delegation of our Council leadership
attending the Boy Scouts of America National
Annual meeting in Nashville, where we returned
with renewed energy and passion ignited by the
exciting new strategic initiatives outlined by
our national leadership. Along with newly
installed National President of the Boy Scouts
of America Robert Gates, we are all poised at
the dawn of a new era for Scouting.
An
Eagle Scout, the former Director of the CIA and
U.S. Secretary of Defense, Mr. Gates is a
charismatic and inspirational leader whose
talent and passion has intersected at a pivotal
moment in the history of the Boy Scouts of
America. He shared with us that what he learned
in Scouting laid the foundation for all of the
leadership assignments he has held throughout
his remarkable career. I have attached in
a link below to a video of his key-note address
to the delegation of council representatives
from around the nation. I urge you to take
several moments to view this presentation where
Mr. Gates clearly articulates the challenges
that are before us and the path he has outlined
to lead over the next two
years.
During
his address he reminded us that our journey over
the past century has been remarkable and has
brought us to spectacular peaks, but it is now
time to focus on developing the strategies that
will propel us into a new invigorated future. A
new direction where he believes our successes
will emerge at the local council level,
supported by the National Council leadership
team. Throughout his career he attributes his
success to a practice of empowering front line
field officers, who because they were the
closest to the problem, were best prepared
to develop creative solutions.
I
hope you will be energized as much as I am by
Mr. Gates' refreshing leadership style. On the
horizon I can see an exciting new trail
emerging. It will be new journey filled with
much promise for the future, calling upon all of
us to become more engaged as we blaze the trail
that lies before us.
And
the march has begun as we speak. We are inviting
a number of community partners to join us on
this new journey and I am pleased to announce
the Orlando Solar Bears have stepped forward to
the challenge by committing to become the
financial sponsor and driving force behind the
annual Boy Scout Golf Classic for the next three
years. Shortly after the opening of summer camp
this June we will celebrate by dedicating the
new Brown & Brown Insurance Aquatics Center,
the result of an investment of $1,000,000 by
this community partner who understands that the
best investment in the future is to invest in
the youth who will lead that future!
If
you have not already done so, please mark your
calendar for June 13 and register (insert link)
to attend the Central Florida Council annual
meeting where we will celebrate your successes
the past year and invite you to join me and your
council leaders in the march moving
forward.
Yours
in Scouting,
Robert Utsey
