Dear Girls/Ladies,
Hi. My name is Lynn Faust and I am helping Betsy Connell facilitate a group of girls in the Athens Area whose sole purpose is to work on their Girl Scout Gold Award. This can be in addition to your regular Troop Meetings and we will work with everyone’s schedule. As you may know, Girl Scouts of the USA is going to celebrate their 100th Birthday next year and our GS Council has the goal of 100 Gold Awardees by our 100th Anniversary. We hope you will be a part of this goal!
We have had a meeting and have chosen to begin working on the Sow What Journey. We will explore our food network in Athens, investigate local agricultural practices , understand how your food choices impact our world and plan a project for the Harvest Award.
We missed you if you were not able to come or were unaware of the meeting at the Athens Service Center but it is not too late to join the group.
We hope you will join us. We want you to!
We will be learning about local harvest and having fun field trips etc. Our first trip is to a swine farm and the Athens Farmers market for a cooking demonstration in the next few weeks. Dairy tours and vegetable farms are on our wish list too with many more opportunities available for your planning.
Please purchase the book for $ 7 at the GS Office (Athens Service Center Hours are: 9-5 M-TH, 9-12 Friday, and normally first Sat of month 10-1 (but in July will be Sat July 9th) . (if you can not buy one, please let me know as I have scholarship monies).
Look over the first two chapters and we are aiming to meet again, next week July 6th.
It was also decided we should each go to a local store and buy a plant of some kind that we can use in a food recipe. Or plant some seeds like summer squash or cucumbers at your own home. Herbs grow well in pots if you do not have space in the ground. Your plant will need at least 6 hours of sunlight.
Our first cooking experiment will be making Pesto Sauce, using basil and parsley so these are two herbs you could plant.
Most any warm weather vegetable will grow now in Georgia. Be creative and have fun with your choices.
Thyme after Thyme Garden shop on Winterville Road, Cofer's, Lowe's or Home Depot, WalMart are just a few places you can find selections but do it soon so we can eat it before school starts!
The Journey will be girl led-which means if you have an idea, we all want to hear it and decide to do it. Read those first two chapters (or the whole book if you have time) and lets get going on the road to your Gold.
Please Look up the requirements for your Gold on the web site:
Just think, You will already have completed one of the requirements when we finish this Journey this summer! If you received your Silver Award, that will count as one of your two Journey's
Please pass this on to any friends that may be interested in joining us.
Next event: Wednesday July 6th, early morning I know at 8:30AM but before it gets hot on the farm or you have to go to a job. (and Lynn needs to be at work by 10AM).
Please let me know
1) you received this and
2) are interested in participating in the Gold Journey as much as your schedule allows and
3) are available Wed July 6th at 8:30AM (I will send location in the next 24 hours but at least 3 girls need to be interested to ensure the tour).
