Calibre is a cross-platform free and open-source suite of e-book software. Calibre supports organizing existing e-books into virtual libraries, displaying, editing, creating and converting e-books, as well as syncing e-books with a variety of e-readers. Editing books is supported for EPUB and AZW3 formats. Books in other formats like MOBI must first be converted to those formats, if they are to be edited. Calibre also has a large collection of community contributed plugins.[3]
On 31 October 2006, when Sony introduced its PRS-500 e-reader, Kovid Goyal started developing libprs500, aiming mainly to enable use of the PRS-500 formats on Linux.[4] With support from the MobileRead forums, Goyal reverse-engineered the proprietary Broad Band eBook (BBeB) file format. In 2008, the program, for which a graphical user interface was developed, was renamed "calibre", displayed in all lowercase.[5]
Calibre supports many file formats and reading devices. Most e-book formats can be edited, for example, by changing the font, font size, margins, and metadata, and by adding an auto-generated table of contents. Conversion and editing are easily applied to appropriately licensed digital books, but commercially purchased e-books may need to have digital rights management (DRM) restrictions removed. Calibre does not natively support DRM removal, but may enable DRM removal after installing plug-ins with such a function.[6][7]
Calibre enables users to sort and group e-books by metadata fields. Metadata can be pulled from many different sources, e.g., ISBNdb.com; online booksellers; and providers of free e-books and periodicals in the US and elsewhere, such as the Internet Archive, Munsey's Magazine, and Project Gutenberg; and social networking sites for readers, such as Goodreads and LibraryThing. It is possible to search the Calibre library by various fields, such as author, title, or keyword. Full text search is available from Calibre 6.0 onwards.[8]
E-books can be imported into the Calibre library, either by sideloading files manually or by wirelessly syncing an e-book reading device with the cloud storage service in which the Calibre library is backed up, or with the computer on which Calibre resides. Also, online content can be harvested and converted to e-books. This conversion is facilitated by so-called recipes, short programs written in a Python-based domain-specific language. E-books can then be exported to all supported reading devices via USB, Calibre's integrated mail server, or wirelessly. Mailing e-books enables, for example, sending personal documents to the Amazon Kindle family of e-readers and tablet computers.[9][10][11][12]
This can be accomplished via a web browser, if the host computer is running and the device and host computer share the same network; in this case, pushing harvested content from content sources is supported on a regular interval (called 'subscription').[citation needed] Also, if the Calibre library on the host computer is stored in a cloud service, such as Box.net, Google Drive, or Dropbox, then either the cloud service or a third-party app, such as Calibre Cloud or CalibreBox, can remotely access the library.[13][14][15][16][17]
Since version 1.15, released in December 2013, Calibre also contains an application to create and edit e-books directly, similar to the more full-featured editor tools of the Sigil application, but without the latter's WYSIWYG editing mode.[18]

Commentaires :I had few books that needed to be converted to a regual ebook - to be read across major lending softwares like Adobe etc. But the problem was the books were encrypted and digitally signed. I used calibre software to rip the DRM to a normal book.
First of all its free and open source, accessible across major platforms, Ebook management, functionality of converting books from one format to another, stripping a digitally signed copy of a book(DRM based), usage of various plugins, compression engines to reduce the size of a converted book, using the calibre as a server and reading books portably - the list goes on with this wonderful software.
Commentaires :As a passionate book reader and an education professional I like to keep my collections tidy and be able to search for books by keywords, titles, tags, etc. Updates are frequent and each time one has to go through the installation procedure (although one's parameters and databases do NOT get lost). However, one can skip most updates since they only solve minor issues (mostly device specific) and only install a new version when major changes are announced.
Calibre is a free software to manage ebook collections locally. By backuping your local book collection to cloud storage and using additional software you can connect to your books from everywhere. Collection management via tags and categories is easy. Metadata management (including automatically downloading covers from public-domain websites) is also easy to understand and fast. The software also includes some powerful conversion features across ebook formats. Reading devices like Kindle and Kobo can easily be connected to Calibre to manage books that are stored locally on the device.
Sometimes I wish the usage were a bit more intuitive. The options are so many and the possibilities so rich that sometimes you get lost in the manual. However, one can easily find his/her way through the most frequently used features and become productive in 15 minutes or so.
Unlike the other reviews (which are talking about the ebook management software), this application is designed to improve your business intelligence with a few different pieces of software. I am most familiar with the Mentor QA suite, which helps you track the personal development goals of your employees and partners. The interface works well and is surprisingly easy to navigate.
Commentaires :Overall, this is a very important and in-depth way to track and record data. I would recommend this product to small and big agencies alike. Quick service and quick user interface. If you need accurate recording software then you need this!
I really liked the quick record search. Very easy to specify dates or time with a quick feedback rate. No waiting for five minutes to pull up data like a lot of other programs. I also enjoy the screen recording. This is great for multiple uses. Mainly for court cases we can go back and review calls for the case. We do use it to train monthly so everyone can see/hear good calls and ones that could have been done differently.
It's free (although I have made several donations over the years), and it's easy to use, at least in a basic mode. If you have a file in one format, it's pretty easy to covert it to another one. The more elaborate features, like editing an epub file, are, not surprisingly harder to do.
When editing an epub file, Calibre will show you what the text will look like in the preview window, but you have to know how to edit the HTML tags to change any of the formatting. It is by no means a WYSIWYG editor. Also, I somehow managed to delete the left pane and no longer can see filename and thus I cannot edit epub files. I was hoping to upgrade and maybe that would restore the default, but the upgrade Calibre will show you what the epub will look like in the preview window, but you have to know how to edit the HTML tags to change any of the formatting. It is by no means a WYSIWYG editor. Also, I somehow managed to delete the left pane and no longer can see filename and thus I cannot edit epub files. process now insists on the right to totally change your browser and I don't like that at all!
Calibre is a beautiful software, which is absolutely free to use. You can import epub files and you can also change the styling by writing your own CSS. I love how it looks and they are doing a great job at keeping us happy.
Commentaires :The many ebook formats out there and limited functionality from tablet to tablet is frustrating, but Calibre removes all those problems. There's not a better ebook organization system I've found. Highly recommend it.
