The season starts with Damon and Bonnie gone and presumed dead. Elena, in a pretty spectacular attempt to hide from pain and heartbreak, has Alaric compel all of her memories of Damon away. He does come back (TVD without Damon is no show of mine) and they reunite, but it takes a while for the beautiful and tragic memories to come back. More on that soon...

He comes back from the dead (thanks Bonnie) but is still a mega-vampire (thus compelling the memories). He falls in love, gets killed (sort of), then comes back but this time as a human. Yeah, he had a pretty big season.

You probably already know that Nina Dobrev left TVD at the end of this season, but at least she had a really beautiful goodbye. Kai, evil genius that he is, linked Elena and Bonnie so that Elena will be in a sleeping-beauty like state until Bonnie dies. There was a second there where it looked like Damon was going to kill Bonnie to get Elena back... but in reality he is just going to wait 60 years for her until they can be together. Swoon.

While the first season definitely left viewers with a cliff-hanger, fans will be disappointed to hear nothing is confirmed (re: a second season) at this moment in time, according to Digital Spy. But the show's starring actor and executive producer, Ian Somerhalder, is apparently hoping to continue the story.

Additionally, the show is based on a graphic novel series, and so far, there are five graphic novels already written, so having another few seasons would make total sense. And really, with that cliff-hanger viewers were left with, there's bound to be more to the story.

"Ideally two for sure, I mean, three, four would be amazing. ... There hasn't been a set number of season. Jonathan's written many books, so there's a lot of room for a storyline and directions for the seasons. So I think that as long as the writing is there and the performances are there we have a good shot at going for a [renewal] anyway. I really hope so."

Here's the premise of V Wars, according to Meaww: Basically, Dr. Luther Swann (played by Ian Somerhalder) inadvertently revives a virus alongside his colleague, Michael Fayne (played Adrian Holmes), and although Luther isn't affected, Michael turns into a vampire, feeding on humans to survive. The virus spreads, and eventually, Michael becomes the leader of the vampires, called 'Blood Nation.'

Luther wants to make peace with the vampires, and to ultimately cure them of their disease. Since that doesn't seem easy, he comes up with a temporary solution, creating substance called 'BludSub.' With this, he makes things right with Michael. But in the season finale, the Bludsub is contaminated, affecting a significant portion of the vampire community. The vampires rebel, and the relationship between humans and vampires is ultimately tainted.

Calix Nikolos (played by Peter Outerbridge), initially seemed to take side with humans, but ends up being a traitor, eventually becoming leader of Blood Nation. Luther's son, Dez, gets kidnapped, and the episode ends with Mila (played by Laura Vandervoot) revealing she knows where Luther's son is, after four long months. This paves a clear path for a second season.

It turns out the two series have no correlation. The actor and producer told Collider he was initially hesitant about being involved with Netflix's new show, but with his producer title and the show's social relevance, they decided it would be a worth-while project.

Get ready to say goodbye, Vampire Diaries fans. The end of the popular vampire show is here and after eight long seasons of doppelgngers, vampires, ghosts, witches, and more, it doesn't seem real that it's actually coming to a close. But, unfortunately, it is. Thankfully, for those who just can't let go, you can rewatch every season online, but when will The Vampire Diaries Season 8 be on Netflix? Fans won't have to wait long to relive the final season.

Thanks to the latest deal Netflix signed with The CW last year, all The CW's shows will release their entire season on the streaming service eight days after their season finale airs. Therefore, The Vampire Diaries' last season will be available for streaming on Netflix as early as Saturday, March 18. So for those of you who missed this final season or the past few seasons or never watched the series at all, you'll be able to binge-watch the entire series very soon.

The Vampire Diaries began airing in 2009 when vampires were all the rage. From Twilight to True Blood, TVD fit right in with the vampire book series adaptation phenomenon that hit in the early 2000s and the show stayed popular for many, many years. It even inspired the spin-off series The Originals, which will begin it's fourth season on Friday, March 17, taking up The Vampire Diaries vacated time slot.

When The Vampire Diaries began, it was all about Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who soon realized her small hometown of Mystic Falls wasn't as safe as she always believed it was. After the death of her parents, she found comfort in Stefan Salvatore (Paul Weasley), but also ended up falling for his brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder), thus beginning one of television's most fought over love triangles.

Dobrev ended up leaving the series after the show's sixth season, but will return in the series finale. The show has changed a lot in the past eight years and the love triangle between Elena and the Salvatore brothers is now non-existent, thanks to Stefan now being fully in love with (and married to) Elena's best friend, Caroline Forbes (Candice King), and fine with Damon and Elena, also popularly known as "Delena," being together.

The only other remaining characters from the show's first season is Elena's other best friend and the town's resident (former) witch Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham), Elena's first boyfriend Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), and Elena's former teacher Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis), who's died and come back a few times throughout the series.

According to International Business Times, Elena's Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning), Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino), and Elena's little brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) will most likely return for the series finale as well. So as sad as it'll be to say goodbye to this show that has dominated many fans' lives for the past eight years, at least viewers can always return to Mystic Falls if they choose to by way of streaming.

Two years after hanging up his fangs as Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder is back in vampire series V Wars, coming to Netflix on December 5. However, the series has a very different feel from his former show, which ran for eight years on The CW.

"It's such a different scope," Somerhalder told Digital Spy, "I would like to think I learned a good bit after eight years of television in this genre. I love this genre. It has been very good to me. But also, it's so unique. It's so vast. There's so much you can do with it." He later added, "We're leaning into aspects of the horror genre, which they work very well together."

In The Vampire Diaries, Somerhalder played vampire Salvatore, while in V Wars he is on the human side, fighting a virus that is turning people into vampires with a desire to feast on human blood. However, these vampires are nothing like those in The CW's show. "These creatures are f***ing scary," he said of the Netflix show's monsters.

"Like, in The Vampire Diaries, they're sexy, they're cool even when they're turned, they can still make jokes. These are murderous creatures. None of them want to be. But if you were in a room with one of these people, first of all, you probably wouldn't make it out, but you would run for your life."

Asked by Cinema Blend why he decided to return to the world of vampires, the former Lost actor said, "In all honesty, when my agent and manager brought this to me, of course, initially I went, 'Guys, there's no way that we can continue in this genre.' And then they very quickly reminded me, as did my wife, that this was a completely different take."

"This was a totally different view of this genre, and it's a grounded view with a best-selling author with five amazing books, and a graphic novel to back it up and to pull and mine from, and this character wasn't a vampire. This character is a scientist," said Somerhalder.

Somerhalder described his character Dr. Luther Swann in a TVLine interview as someone who is "going to be fighting his way tooth and nail to not only stay alive to protect his son, but as a doctor, as a research physician, and as a scientist, he wants to protect people and he wants to save people."

"He's an infectious disease specialist. He's literally catapulted into this world and he's forced under really tough circumstances to try and find a cure because his best friend in the world is infected," said Somerhalder.

Occult teens sucking face and sucking blood have been around forever. It gets easy in a post-Twilight world to trace it all back to Edward and Bella but long before Twilight there was Buffy, Sabrina, and so much more. Yet, with this long history of potential influences, something about First Kill makes it feel almost directly connected to The CW's The Vampire Diaries.

Unfortunately, despite being deliciously soapy, full of drama, and an improved evolution of the formula, the Netflix series got the ax last year in August when the streamer announced the First Kill would not be getting a follow-up season. Considering the first season ended with a plot twist and cliffhanger of sorts, it's disappointing news. Now we'll never know how Cal and Juliette get back together (because, obviously, they were going to get back together.) The biggest changes that First Kill made to the teen vampire romance subgenre wasn't even about the queer romance in a space that is so often dominated by heterosexual couples, but actually leaning into those things that always make us scratch our heads when it comes to these shows.
