In a recent update, Spotify removed the option to make a playlist private on the desktop version of Spotify. If you're anything like us, you immediately noticed and then your group chat went crazy over this new information. Remain calm though because you can still make a playlist private in the Spotify mobile app, so no one needs to know what you actually listen to.

Now on desktop when you make a new playlist, you are only given the option to "Remove from profile," which means "Friend activity" will still show your followers that you're listening to the playlist even though it isn't featured on your profile.

Titles of private playlists, on the other hand, won't show up under "Friend activity," and can only be seen if you share the link to the playlist with another user. However, the songs you are listening to will still show up in Friend activity unless you are listening in a Private Session.

However, the way most of my users are using playlists is to keep track of things they want to watch in the future. They are typically things that the user has not watched yet, so it's not meant as a recommendation to others, just as a way of them personally keeping track of what they want to watch. Having that kind of playlist be public is of questionable benefit to other users.

Additionally, it is not clear when you create a playlist that other users will be able to see it. That has the potential to cause some embarrassment. He hasn't created one yet, but I wouldn't want to see my nephew's "movies to fap to" playlist, for example.

If I could make a suggestion, I would suggest associating each playlist with the user who created it, and giving that user the ability to make the playlist private or public. For example, the following two checkboxes could be shown when creating or editing a playlist:

Initially, both checkboxes would be unchecked. Since another user cannot edit a playlist they cannot see, the second would be allowed to be checked only if the first were also checked. (You could grey it out to make that clear.)

The features seem very closely aligned, albeit I'm probably drastically exaggerating here. But is playlists essentially private collections? Life for the example the OP had, if he wanted to share his "Harv's Favorite Horror Films" with other users, he could create it as a collection, and if he did not, he could create it as a playlist? So albeit all his request around a read-only public list is to be incorporated, 2 out of the 3 conditions are already satisfied today? correct me if wrong....

I find issues with this as far back as 2017. Almost three years, and we still dont have a way to make playlists and collections private? It seems odd that anyone on the server would be allowed to just delete any playlist or collection? Is this still in the works?

While they're working on this feature, the workaround is to attach a custom tag to the metadata of a playlist, then restrict all other users from accessing that tag in the parental controls.

Not the easiest, but it makes it functional for now. The way I do this is I attach use the usernames as the tags. So my each user's parental controls block a list of tags including all other usernames.

Which brings me to a problem with the current android app... @@Luke, it doesn't allow us to edit the metadata of actual playlists. Web UI seems to allow that, but the option is missing from the long-press menu and the "...More" menu inside the playlist.

Another new feature that affects this is the inclusion of "playlist" as an entry in user library access. You can disable all playlists to individual users that way. Would be easy to forget to turn on playlist access for a user and wonder why they can't see any of them regardless of parental control tags.

I recently had a user delete someone else's playlist because she didn't realize she could see those created by others. She also didn't realize everyone could see her playlists. She also can't update the cover art for her playlists, which she very much wants to do.

I just want to note that I understand that they can ban you for no reason if they want, but I still find it extremely idiotic to put it very lightly that you can get a strike on a platform for the sole reason that you used the platform's features. The playlist had like a hundred videos that I randomly saved in there, videos that were not posted by me, I just saved them in a playlist. After years of them being posted, youtube changes their TOS and now they are considered in violation with the new TOS, so they not only strike the channels that posted them, but the people who saved those videos in private playlists. An extremely idiotic move for no reason.

While Spotify is often used for sharing playlists with friends, there may be some playlists or listening behaviors that you want to keep private. That's where Spotify's Make Private option comes in handy.

Quick tip: If you only see an option that says Make Public, then the playlist is already private. And to make a playlist public again, you'd tap the three dots and select Make Public.

So, I had a private playlist with 100+ videos, most of them "documentaries" and podcast episodes because I enjoy to watch / listen to long videos while I play or work. I just recieved an e-mail from Youtube telling me that "the Youtube community has flagged one of your playlists as inappropriate" and that "after revising its content, we decided the playlist does not follow our community guidelines".

I'm not going to complain about the list not being "inappropriate" (it was perfectly innocent) because the guys from Youtube delete things at random some times, but this is a blatant lie. It couldn't have been flagged because it was private. Is there any way I can get that playlist back without having to start all over again?

I have a YouTube account which has 4 channels in it. I created private and public playlists in all channels but when i'm trying to get private playlist through OAuth process i couldn't get the private playlist ids only public playlist are displaying.Even i tried api explorer i could see the only public playlists not private Below is my code please help me

Yes now I could able to get private playlists of my channels.Instead of YouTube.Search.List search = youTube.search().list("id,snippet"); and setting search.setType("playlist"); It is better to go for YouTube.Playlists.List. Below sharing my code which may be useful for others

I'm trying to right click on a playlist to make it private and the private option doesn't exist anymore. is this just me? i asked someone else and they had the same thing. how would i be able to private a playlist from now on?

You're going to need to change the privacy setting of the playlist to "Unlisted". Then you'll be able to share a URL with anyone who you want to be able to access the playlist. The playlist won't show up in search, so only those with the URL will be able to access it. You can change the setting back to "Private" again and then no one will be able to reach it again.

If you still have concerns you could make a new private playlist, move your songs there and delete the songs in the other playlist, followed by deleting the old playlist. Once you have done this be sure not to share the link and your playlist should stay private.

Although all created playlists on YouTube are marked Public by default, there are some boards you can create that are marked "Private". This article will explain how to create one of these private lists that no one but yourself will know exists on YouTube.

I bought IDM for this purpose- Try download a full private playlist from youtube , and for some reason when I enter the private playlist and copy the url it only download a html file and not all the videos...

Unless IDM is somehow exploiting YouTube I'm not sure how it could download the playlist - unless it is your own private play list and you're having IDM download as you.

Mike just finished a video course and uploaded all the videos to a YouTube playlist, but he wanted to keep the YouTube playlist private because he only wanted to share it with his friends and family.

According to YouTube if the visibility setting is set to public, you can share the public url. It can also be added to a channel section, show up in search, related videos and suggested videos. It can be posted on your channel and also show up in the subscriber feed. None of those features apply if the visibility setting is set to private.

Keep in mind that if any of the individual videos in the private playlist are set to public, anybody with that link will be able to view that video in the playlist. If I set all the individual videos in the private playlist to private, then none of the videos will be available to the public.

Playlist privacy settings are important, because you may want to share your playlists with others or make them private. All playlists on YouTube are created as public by default. You can change the playlist from public to private or unlisted, or from private to public or unlisted.

In what is shaping up to be a widespread privacy controversy, Spotify has come under scrutiny following allegations by users that the music streaming service made their private playlists public without their consent.

"Why has this happened? is there a way to make bulk lists private? I don't want to spend days of my life changing them one by one, there are over 1400 lists and I cant invoice for that time so it will take away from may wages."

Back in March, a user proposed a theory stating, "The actual settings of our playlists haven't changed. What was formerly known as 'private' and 'public' playlists are now all called 'public', since they weren't actually private previously, as they could be shared through a link."
