Back in August, I did a complete upgrade of the FreeBSD operating
system on which Triumph's mailing list software was running.
It went smoothly but there was a delayed fuse. I rarely reboot Unix
boxes so I didn't know I'd set a bomb in the mailing list software.

Today I was vacuuming months of dog hair and dust from the server when
I accidentally hit the "OFF" switch. Everything came back up fine
with the exception of the Mailman list software. The upgrade to the
underlying Python engine broke Mailman completely.

Unfortunately, I was caught in a Catch 22. The rest of the operating
system was dependent on this upgraded Python and no amount of hacking
nor Googling for hacks could fix it for Mailman.

For the past year or so I've been intending to move the Magpie lists
to an ASP like Yahoo or Google. It really makes no sense for me to
run a list over my already saturated net connection when these ASP
solutions do a better job of it anyway. In addition, my mail server
is so locked down with anti-spamming rules that it was rejecting a lot
of innocent posts and users.

So all this server problem did was give me a boot to make this long-
overdue move now. I couldn't even grab the subscription lists from
it. I had to use old Unix hacker tricks to extract the email
addresses from Mailman's bizarre binary database. But I think I
recovered 99% of you, even your old addresses.

It's the end of an era, folks, but I think most people will welcome
the change because of the added flexibility of Google groups.

Thanks for doing all this, Steve. The list may not be as busy as it
once was, but it is still a valuable resource.

Steve,

Likewise, many thanks for the effort you've expended. I'd really hate
to see the original, old list go away.

I third that! This is the first of many Triumph groups I joined back
in '97 and is still the one I can count on for old school knowledge,
especially of the T3's. Thanks for all your hard work over the years
Steve!
