(Sorry for the cross post, just really irritated)

In a word, crap! When I bought a new bike in April, it was a choice
between the R1200GS and the Tiger. Thirteen years of faithful service
from my 96 Adventurer steered me toward the Tiger. I went with the
full luggage package, since I tend to do a lot of distance riding.

In the five months I've had it, the Tiger has been spectacular, the
luggage has been the opposite.

In the first month, the top-box broke right at the hooks that hold it
to the platform. If I hadn't noticed right away, it would have come
off the bike. Fortunately, it was replaced under warranty.

A few months later, on a ride to Nova Scotia, I hit a pothole on the
interstate and the left saddle bag popped open spilling my
girlfriend's clothes all over the highway ... note, this was at the
BEGINNING of our trip. Not fun.

The following week, I went on a business trip, and when I arrived at
my destination, the top box was gone! I can only imagine the same
thing happened to it again, and this time, I hadn't noticed in time!

And just last week one of the straps that prevents the side bag from
coming completely open broke!

I thought this was luggage designed for "Adventure touring"! Clearly
it can't handle the adventure that is NY City!

I spoke to Peter Carleo at Triumph who just kept repeating that they
have tested the luggage and this didn't happen! They said the same
thing when my dealer tried to intercede on my behalf.

I am extremely disappointed that Triumph would quibble over a couple
of hundred dollars when I've spent $17,000 on the bike, as well as
$9,000 on my Adventurer in 96 and several more thousand in parts over
the years.

Has anyone had experience fitting BMW Adventure bags to a Tiger? Those
look like they can handle more than the useless Triumph bags. I don't
think I want to lose any more of my possessions on the road!

I'm assuming the Tiger you purchased was a 07 up. I know of others in your
same situation with the 07 up bags. No such problems reported with the
99-06 models. But that doesn't help ya. There are quite a few aluminum
adventure style cases available today. But they are expensive and WIDE. If
it were me I'd go with one of the myriad soft bag choices. I've been
riding continuously since 69 and have owned both hard and soft bag setups
on a multitude of bikes and have just had less issues like your with soft
bags. But, thats just me. And I know many really like top boxes. But
I've found a duffel works as well for me but is less tidy.

My friend had a unique solution. He bought one of these

And cut it to fit inside one of these as a tail bag floor

Using a drill, some hardware screws and washers he attached it to his
bike's rack. That sucker ain't going nowhere and since the bag opens from
the top it supplanted his previous hard top box nicely. Hope this helps!

Have you considered the Trax boxes? Check out this thread on ADVrider.com:

I think the Trax look better than the more "adventure" style BMW cases.

As a fellow Tiger owner ('07, in white -- fastest color :D ) I agree
with you on the luggage. One of my side cases opened on the highway.
Thankfully nothing fell out, but if not for the cager next to me
gesturing frantically, I never would have noticed.

Ken: yes, it's an '09. If you can point me to discussions of others
with problems, that would be helpful. I'm writing a letter to Triumph
UK, since the Cust Svc guy in the US is a nimrod, and I'd like to be
able to cite others claiming to have this problem.

Jesse: I didn't know you had a Tiger, I thought you rode a Beemer. I
will disagree about white, I contend Orange is the fastest color.
That aside, the Trax cases look absolutely perfect, and it seems like
they're easily removable. I asked my dealer to try to source them for
me (I'd like to give them the business) but if they can't I'm going to
contact the author of that article, it seems like he's in Brooklyn as
well!

Thanks for the input (and also Kit off list!) on this. It seems
idiotic that a company that makes such great bikes will alienate
customers over shoddy accessories!
