Someone on the old magpie group, was it Bill LItant? , had a problem with his bike not being able to run at speed without stalling. Then after a minute or two, the bike would re-start?

I may have found the solution today. E-mail me or the list back, whomever it was.

That might have been me.

My Trident runs fine until after I restart it the first time. (I can go for a while when first started that day, then if I stop for lunch, when I get back on it will start- sometimes I can hear a bit of a miss- and then die after about 1 mile.  Then restarts and will be fine for the rest of the day.

Any possibilities welcome.

Fred - my problem is that when I wrap the throttle hard from an idle it dies and won't start unless I shut the ignition off and then on again. I'm wondering if it's the ignitor. Kit Halstead has kindly offered to loan me one for a test when he has a chance to free it up. But, what did you discover?

Bill,

I hate to say this but "they all do that". You can't flick the throttle to
wide open like you're spinning a foosball shaft while you're at idle - the
engine will die from starvation almost every time. But, try it when you're
running along at 5 or 6,000 rpm and the bike should accelerate just fine.
It's got to be under load, Bill. Not when you're in neutral and have the
engine running at this speed.

On the other hand, if you roll the throttle on from idle to a quarter
throttle, it should respond just fine.

Fred,

They all do not do that. My 98 Sprint has instant throttle response from
idle after it warms up. I never had an issue with the engine stopping even
when it is cold, just refuses to go faster. It is very cold-blooded though,
takes a long time to warm up on 20 F days, 4 or 5 miles going slow, about 10
miles at highway speeds. When above 50, it warms up in uder a mile.

My problem is just the opposite. On hot days it sometimes will not return
to its usual idle, drops to 2000 for a while before slowly going down. This
is after coming to a complete stop. Sometimes when idling, it will increase
to 2000 or so then come down with no input from me. One of these days I
plan to remove and clcean the carbs.

In the meantime, I just say it has character.

No, Fred, I don't think you read this closely. The problem is likely electrical. At a hard crank from idle, once warm, the thing dies dead - e.g. shuts off, including an immediate tachometer plunge, faster than the engine stop. You can then crank 'til doomesday and it won't restart UNLESS you turn the ignition off and then on. The moment the ignition is cycled, it will start immediately. If they all did this, there wouldn't have been once sold as even cranking back up after a gear change can shut it down dead.
