The scary part is not that they're doing shoddy accessories, but that they've been doing them for so long.  A little story:

I rode my Tiger (w/Givi bag setup) to the last Daytona RAT party at the original site (I guess that would make it 2004, maybe 2005), and ended up getting introduced to the gentleman who was, at that time, in charge of Triumph accessories at Hinckley.  Sorry, name totally escapes me.  I was bending his ear about the possibility of a couple of accessories that would have put the Tiger right up there with the R1200GS, not realizing at the time that Triumph was backing the Tiger down into a soft-roader, poseur adventure tourer..

He gave my bike a good lookover and commented about my using Givi bags.  I told him flat out that I went with them because the current Triumph bags weren't waterproof enough, the right bag was a joke regarding carrying capacity, and I'd heard stories about lock failures.  He was silent for a moment, took a quick look around to make sure we weren't being overherd, looked my straight in the eye and said, "Yes, I know, our luggage it utter crap.  However, we're working on a redesign which should take care of the problems."

Guess they haven't made it yet.  And I still won't consider a touring bike where you have to by the luggage separately unless Givi makes racks for it.

Ken: yes, it's an '09.  If you can point me to discussions of others
with problems, that would be helpful.  I'm writing a letter to Triumph
UK, since the Cust Svc guy in the US is a nimrod, and I'd like to be
able to cite others claiming to have this problem.

Jesse:  I didn't know you had a Tiger, I thought you rode a Beemer.  I
will disagree about white, I contend Orange is the fastest color.
That aside, the Trax cases look absolutely perfect, and it seems like
they're easily removable.  I asked my dealer to try to source them for
me (I'd like to give them the business) but if they can't I'm going to
contact the author of that article, it seems like he's in Brooklyn as
well!

Thanks for the input (and also Kit off list!) on this.  It seems
idiotic that a company that makes such great bikes will alienate
customers over shoddy accessories!

Let's hope Triumph steps up to the plate for the next Sprint/sport
tourer/Trophy??? revision. This review of the 2010 Kawasaki Concours sounds
pretty sweet.
