RailHawks swoop for Kandji should yield dividends on the field or in the bank
One of the most interesting stories of the past USL-MLS season has been the transfer saga of Mac Kandji from the Atlanta Silverbacks to Red Bull New York.
At first it appeared that the menacing Silverbacks forward from Senegal was going to be sold to Red Bull NY, but the deal was quashed apparently by MLS. Eventually Atlanta worked out a loan deal that did allow Kandji to join the New York MLS squad and finds the forward who terrorized the RailHawks last season playing in the MLS Cup Final tomorrow.
But if that wasn't enough, the saga seems to have taken yet another twist that looks like it could pay big dividends for the RailHawks, either on the field, or in the transfer kitty. With the news that the Atlanta Silverbacks would sit out the 2009 USL-1 season, it appears that Atlanta Silverbacks owner Boris Jerkunica, who still has a small minority share in the Carolina RailHawks, has sold Kandji's contract to the RailHawks in order to keep him from becoming a free agent by default with the Silverbacks ceasing operation.
This means that the RailHawks, not the Silverbacks, now seem to be in the driver's seat with regards to Kandji's future. Kandji's loan to Red Bull NY does have a buyout clause, believed to be around $150,000 (which would now be payable to Carolina over 2 years) but should New York not exercise that right, it appears that Kandji would either join the RailHawks for 2009 or the RailHawks could sell his rights during the transfer window.
Either way, it appears that the RailHawks stand to benefit from the hiatus that our Southern Derby rivals will be taking.

suspended, right?) at home in February. I assume it will be played in a
sub-freezing Columbus. But once again, USA-Mexico and UNC-Duke basketball will be played on the same day (Feb. 11th). | I should have emailed sooner, but a friend of mine and I are driving up to Columbus early, early Wednesday morning for the game and back Thursday morning (more/less). Is anyone looking for a ride? My friend Kris is driving, so I'd have to ask him, but it's just two of us in the car right now, so he'd probably be cool taking a couple more. I don't think you could stay with us at our hotel but if you were planning to drive up yourself, let me know if you'd be interested in carpooling. Mark |
