The Carolina RailHawks had to win Saturday night in their season finale
to have any hope of making the USL-1 playoffs. And just when it looked
like a Kupono Low penalty miss and a great performance in goal from
Chase Harrison would keep the RailHawks scoreless, Martin Nuñez, who
earlier in the evening had been crowned a co-offensive player of the
season along with Santiago Fusilier, found the game winner in the 4th
minute of stoppage time to give Carolina a 1-0 victory. With the
RailHawks playing up a man for the final 20 minutes and attacking
relentlessly, they finally broke through on the penultimate play of the
match when a Mauricio Segovia looping throughball caught Portland out
trying to press a high offside trap. Harrison had to sprint outside his
penalty area where he could not use his hands. He misjudged the wildly
bouncing ball with his feet an as he collided with another RailHawks'
attacker, the ball squirted free to the diminutive Argentinian who
calmy fired home the game winner sending WakeMed soccer park into
delirium.
The festive celebration of the dramatic season-ending victory went on
for some time, even after many of the folks in the stadium had learned
that indeed Minnesota had beaten Montreal 3-1 to eliminate Carolina
from contention for the final USL-1 playoff spot.
