Carolina's hopes of making a last ditch run at the playoffs suffered a
serious blow Sunday evening when they drew 1-1 with the Rochester
Rhinos. After leading 1-0 from the 7th minute when Dan Antoniuk set up
Hamed Diallo for his 5th goal and 13th point since joining the
RailHawks on July 9th from the Rhinos (both team highs), the RailHawks
conceded an equalizer when Ross Smith headed in a free kick from Luke
Kreamalmayer in the 83rd minute.
As a result of the draw, the USL table now looks like this:
In order for Carolina to win its 3-way battle with Atlanta and
Minnesota for the final playoff spot, the following results must play
out:
1) First and foremost, Carolina
must win both its remaining games. Without 6 points, they will not finish in the top 7 regardless of other results.
2) In addition, Minnesota
must not win their final match
of the season, at home against Montreal on Saturday, September 20th. A
draw would give the Thunder 37 points, which Carolina could reach and
would then qualify ahead of Minnesota on the first tiebreaker, which is
head-to-head record in League matches. Carolina is 1-0-2 this season
against Minnesota.
3) Also, Atlanta
must not earn more than 3 points in their final two
matches -- Friday, September 19th at Puerto Rico and Sunday, September
21st at Miami. Should they earn 4 points from those matches, they will
finish on 37 points, which Carolina could reach with two wins, but
Atlanta holds the tiebreaker based on the RailHawks 0-1-2 record this
season against the Silverbacks.
It's a longshot, but considering Carolina's mastery of Charleston and
the fact that Portland, who has been eliminated from the playoffs
should have little incentive next Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park,
RailHawks fans can still dream of seeing playoff soccer in Cary this
year with two final results and a little help from our "friends" in
Montreal, Puerto Rico, and Miami.
