Answer:
The pictures are those of Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, David
(of David and Goliath fame) and Charlemagne.
The connection: these are the four people who are traditionally
thought to represent the four Kings in a pack of cards:
King of Spades David
King of Hearts Charlemagne,
King of Diamonds Julius Caesar
King of Clubs Alexander the Great
