Current scores:

A very impressive performance all round! Some people wondered whether it is valid to use Google/Wiki and the answer is yes. I think the questions were hard enough to justify that. A commendable performance especially for those who got one of Q.3, 4 or 5.

So, here are the answers, followed by the final tally of scores!

1. Jacques Chirac, Kirk Douglas, Eddy Merckx, Sean Connery.
A: All these people are caricatured in some Asterix and Obelix adventure.
[Aneesh, Bodi and Machi got this.]

2. Pi, Pym, Parker.
A: Yann Martel named Pi's tiger Richard Parker as a tribute to Pym's shipmate Richard Parker in Edgar Allen Poe's "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket". The Richard Parker in Poe's story is eaten by his mates after they are stranded at sea. Several decades after Poe's story, a bunch of ship-wrecked sailors (in reality) butchered a sailor boy and ate him, the boy's name - Richard Parker.
[Manish got enough of this for the full 1 point.]

3. Sergey Brin & Larry Page, Bill Gates, Satan.
A: Some years ago, a Google search for "More evil than Satan himself" would give Microsoft as the first hit and an MSN search for the same pointed to Google!
[Saumc and Kabra cracked this in full, Aneesh got one side of the story but it is a valid connection.]

4. Mark Knopfler, Jenghiz Khan, Arthur C. Clarke, Steven Spielberg.
A: All of them have had dinosaurs named after them at some point of time.
Masiakasaurus knopfleri, Jenghizkhan bataar, Serendipaceratops arthurcclarkei, Utahraptor spielbergi
[Machi got enough to score full 2 points, but Kabra deserves credit for spotting the dinosaur connection and Saumc for almost cracking this.]

5. Adam and Eve, Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, Marcus Aurelius and Faustina the Younger.
A: One of the children of each of these husband-wife pair killed his sibling.
Cain killed Abel, Aurangzeb executed Dara Shikoh and Commodus had Lucilla killed.
[Great crack by Manish!]

Final scores:

Player : Score (Q - Points, Q - Points, .... )

Manish : 4.5 (2 - 1, 4 - 0.5, 5 - 3)
Kabra : 3.5 (3 - 2, 4 - 1, 5 - 0.5)
Aneesh : 3.5 (1 - 1, 2 - 0.5, 3 - 2)
Machi : 3.0 (1 - 1, 4 - 2)
Saumc : 3.0 (3 - 2, 4 - 1)
Bodi : 1.0 (1 - 1, 3 - 0.5)
Nikhil : 0.5 (4 - 0.5)

Kabra gets 0.5 on Q.5 for pointing to an interesting relevant article and Nikhil get 0.5 on Q.4 for a (somewhat) funny joke :-)

Did I miss someone?

A round of applause for everyone!

Now for something different:
whats the relationship?

0 - 1
1 - 0
2 - 0
3 - 0
4 - 1 (depends. One this time).
5 - 0
6 - 1
7 - 0
8 - 2
9 - 1

Clue: A kindergarten kid will have easier time solving this.

Just for clarity - does junta prefer *public* or *private* replies to the quiz master ?

I prefer *public* ones...simulates real quizzing situations. I would discourage private answers as much as possible - let others enjoy your wit/wild guesses, too and, of course, again to simulate real quizzing conditions.

A:All hell would break loose.

I would prefer private answers...It would be better if the quizmaster posts the witty / correct answers in one comprehensive mail...

The reason is, if someone checks their mail after some of the questions have already been answered by someone else, it doesn't give them a fair chance to attempt these questions...

yup - first come , first cracked. just like in a quiz - besides, since we're all using Google anyway, what kind of 'fair chance' are we talking about here? :D :D

Both have its merits/demerits. Should we have a poll ? Or maybe the quiz master can decide.

Well, with email..its different...It can't be like a real quiz where everyone is asked the same question at the same time...

With email..the question reaches the participant only after he reads the mail..So, if some of us are traveling and are in India or in another time zone...Its not fair to expect everyone to see the quiz at the same time..Since the person can't start "googling" for the answer at the same time :)!!

Also, with Audio/Visual quizzes...google is worse than Satan!!...as the "BIG" brains of google still can't search images..so we still have a "fair" chance to crack the questions...

But its upto the quiz master..If he prefers a public answer/private answer...he should mention it in the quiz!!

I think it is fair if the quiz master specifies public/private, since it also depends on the type of questions.
That said, it was great to see people tag-teaming and bouncing ideas for the just concluded Connections Quiz, so my preference is *public* (at least for now).

First argument of the group... yay!!

although I prefer open answers. if there is no ticking going around,
there will be less enthu in junta to take part. I for one, had guessed
the answer to the adam and eve question, but simply didn't post it coz
I had no enthu. (I skimmed the roman couples kids wiki articles but
didn't find anything -- manish outdid me there). It seemed silly to
work and reply when nobody seemingly cared. And going forward, I don't
think thats going to change.

But I like Aneesh's idea to let the quiz master decide.

<<sighing and shaking head>> if we're going to have private mails to the quizmaster, then why have a group at all?? then what you're suggesting is that we use this as just a repository ofr questions and 'correst' answers - that the entire fun of guessing worng, then reversing track because something someone says rings a bell and sends you on a possible wild goose chase should be given up for the possibility of its being 'fair'. machan, im going to be answering fmor India and i have no problems with quizzes being posted in US time.

Don't make this a competitive sport - we 're just here to have fun. It doesn't matter if you, or anyone else, answers ahead of me. What simportnat is the fun in answering the question.

cheers,

Hee hee...OK..OK..I surrender..I can't bear senti for the sake of fun...

Public is fine with my contrived sense of "fair, no fun" too...

So public answers it is...unless the quizmaster specifies he wants "private" answers in his bedroom...

Is it the number of times the "curve" for writing the digit self-intersects?

Is it the number of closed polygons or circles involved in writing the number?

And, a mild request, Kabra - could you please post new questions as a separate thread?

cheers,

Yup.

Machi, why "mild" before the request? I almost don't want to do heed
your request.
