While that is a good reading for Fire Star wires but if you roll your
own you may want to experiment a bit. Different wires have different
resistances and different physical properties. Too little resistance
and it may burn through before the pyrogen ignites, too much and it
may take longer to lite if it lites at all. You also have to factor
in the properties of the pyrogen but I can talk about thit one
later.
Remember OHM's law when you think about the wire. at 1.5 Ohms you
will have 8 amps acrossed the wire where 2.5 Omhs is only 4.8. That's
a heck of a difference for a 28-32 gauge wire.
The best formula for igniters I have come up with so far is 70grams
very fine AP (the finer the better) 5 grams 400-300 mesh Aluminum 5
grams copper oxide and 10 grams 50-100 mesh titanium if you can get
it. mix with ping pong ball goo. Dip and enjoy.
