All of them - PNM, UNC, COP etc have money in CLICO so they only care about CLICO. They paid CLICO members $75,000 and under their money but none for HCU members. They said two months ago that HCU members will be receiving an envelope via TT Post mail:  so far not one envelope has been received by any of the 100,000 members and Dookeran and the PP govt have not said a word  .. as HCU members continue to suffer.

Kamla, Suruj, Dookeran, Roodal, Vasant etc are all the same, not better than Harry - many of them as well as PNM and COP people fed at the HCU trough; they promised to help HCU but as more and more HCU members die in misery and suffering, Kamla and her PP govt do not lift a finger, they do not care, they are now friends with the parasitic oligarchy, with BG and BP and the local business elite -- who the hell cares about those HCU people??

But this is what the PP govt has become - they don't care about the people who supported them, they are another bunch of power-hungry corrupt politicians who will destroy farmers crops, suffer the HCU people, fatten themselves at the trough, and then in five years go away with all the loot they can get, leaving the people in the hands of the PNM.

To suffer at the hands of the PNM was bad, to do so at the hands of the PP govt is unforgiveable, unpardonable, a travesty.... this govt will be the unwilling recipient of the karma from all those sick, old, suffering  HCU members. You are a disgrace, you betrayed the HCU members. Dookeran has not uttered a word, Kamla has other things to do with her new found friends, and Roodal et al are no better than the PNM Ministers who basically told HCU people to jump off a cliff, F off.  PP govt is no different than Harry, Duprey and their accomplices.
AS NEWSDAY says, it is too much to bear, to see the betrayal of HCU members by this PP govt.

Too much to bear

Saturday, July 9 2011

NO ONE could fail to be moved by the heartfelt pleas of witnesses to the crash of the Hindu Credit Union (HCU) at this week’s Commission of Inquiry into Clico and the HCU.

Witness after witness tearfully recalled how their loved ones had lost not only their life savings, but in some cases had lost their very lives due to stress-related illness, after the crash of the HCU.

One witness recalled trying to hide news of the HCU crash from his ailing 80- year- old grandfather, who had nonetheless found out from a neighbour. As this elderly man was already in ill health, the news of the HCU collapse was apparently too much to bear, and he suffered a stroke three days later, was rushed to hospital, but died two days later.

The inquiry on Tuesday heard the testimony of one witness who likened her loss to a grievous violation of her person, saying, “I felt financially raped. It is really painful”. Also that day, another witness — who ironically had worked for the HCU — lamented that she had lost a plot of land she had intended to be an inheritance for her son. Another witness lamented that she could not get back her funds from the HCU in order to pay for urgent medical treatment for her mother, who as a result deteriorated to the extent of having a leg amputated and then died.

These are all horrendous stories, that are a continuing and unfolding nightmare for those involved. We salute the courage of those giving evidence.

However we abhor the reported intimidation of other potential witnesses - both inside and outside of the hearing — from testifying.

Shockingly, a host of witnesses have suddenly become “ill” and unable to testify, as reported in Thursday’s Newsday headline of “Fear grips witnesses”.

We note the admonition of commission chairman, Sir Anthony Colman against overly-aggressive cross-examination of witnesses, and we hope such deportment is also being closely monitored by the Law Association.

It is highly lamentable that witnesses have not only refused to testify but that the counsel to the inquiry has found it necessary to decline to publicly name further witnesses lest they too be intimidated overnight from attending the hearing.

If true, such strong-arming of witnesses outside of the hearing is a clear violation of the law, and must be investigated by the police, forthwith.

The Clico and HCU collapses are in large measure due to a failure of the State in its various guises to protect the interests of small investors who were exposed to allurements that were simply too-good-to-be-true. The onus is now on the State to do all in its power to let the hearing proceed as equitably as possible to try to bring some measure of catharsis, if not actually a full financial redress, to those hurt by the fiascos.

Given the severe distress felt by victims, that worsened the health of many sometimes to the point of death, we wonder whether the State perhaps through the Ministry of Health, could offer a specific programme of counselling and medical check-ups for such traumatised persons.

Persons who worked hard their whole lives — who opted to walk a mile to save $3 in taxi fare, who lunched on a home-made sandwich while their colleagues splashed out on the latest fast-food fad, who “banded their bellies” to save for a rainy day and for their children’s inheritance, have now lost everything in one fell swoop.

We hope for a full airing of all testimonies however painful, so some sort of justice can be felt by the victims, however much recompense they may actually receive eventually in their hands.
