Scanningfrom the Device Settings >> Printers & Scanners screen generally uses Mac's scan utility, Image Capture. Try scanning using the MF Scan Utility or MF Toolbox, found in Applications \ Canon Utilities\.
If neither of those is present, download and run the Scanner Driver & Utility installation [Drivers & Downloads Page link]. If they're present but cannot find the printer, try registering the MF236n, as a new device, on the Scanner tab of the Printers & Scanners list.
I have the same issue, but I have a PC running on WIndows 10. My Printer utility does not show scan, it allows only printing. Do I need a different driver for scanning from the MF236n newtowork computer.
I support about 20 printers (Canon MF236n) in my department. As of last week, all of them have stopped scanning using the feeder. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the MF software, which did not fix the problem. I also installed a brand new MF236n that was a spare. It did the same thing.
You can fix this by uninstalling the printer drivers and MF Scan. Then reinstall the printer drivers and then MF Scan. Not the best solution because it happens all the time with our printers. But the only one I know so far.
I am not a printer expert, nor did I play one on TV....HOWEVER...I too have been struggling with this on and off for MONTHS. Here is the fix I just discovered. After I uninstalled and reinstalled everything Canon related, I found this neat app within the Microsoft Store called Windows Scan. My logic was that perhaps a 3rd party software would get me up and running until an official patch was pushed out.
Within this app, you will have the option to select several settings. Like scan via tray or feeder, resolution, output format, ect....I set it all up as I would have had my Canon scan settings and performed a scan. Boom, that worked! however, it was not wanting to follow my instructions as to where I wanted the PDFs stored.
For kicks and giggles, I thought I would try to scan directly from the Canon to my PC once more before moving on with the 3rd party software. And to my surprise, it worked like a charm.
Now I have NO IDEA what this did? or why? I just know what now my Canon works again. All in all it took less than 2 min to download, install and try. Let me know if it works. And if so please spread the word. We're all in this together hahahaha
I tried uninstalling/re-installing, updating the printer's firmware, rebooting a few times, different USB ports, power cycling the printer, using the Windows Scan app and restarting the WIA services; however, i am still having issues scanning from the feeder..... it is like the Windows app and Canon software are not able to detect there is a document in the feeder...
I am having the same issue with the scanner. First I thought it was the printer so I bought a new one and still having the same issue with a brand new one. Uninstalled, reinstalled software and drivers. Each time I want to scan from the feeder I have to turn off the machine, turn it back on, go to my pc and open the cannon software.
I have an ImageClass mf236n that was working fine up until 2 or 3 days ago (around 8/17/23). It stopped scanning and printing completely, spitting out an error: "Cannot communicate with the device. The cable may be disconnected, or the device may be turned off. Check the device status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated. Code: 155,0,0".
In troubleshooting, I reinstalled the latest drivers and utility software (winmfscanutilityv12101) from the Canon web site with no success. I replaced the USB cable twice but still the same behavior. I then installed an older version of the software (winmfscanutilityv12004) and voila, the scanning functionality worked even with the old cable. However, I found out later that the print functionality no longer works. The printer is unresponsive to print commands, and the print queue doesn't show anything. I've reinstalled the latest drivers. Would appreciate any assistance.

Everything else works. The PC recognizes the printer and the printer sees the PC, but I can't scan from the printer. I keep getting "an error occured" message. However I can go to the PC, find the printer in devices and remotely scan from the PC. latest driver is installed.

The driver package for the Linux operating system includes code components that were not written by Canon USA or its affiliates. In addition, Linux exists in many different versions, and the driver cannot be tested against all of them. Thus, Canon USA is not able to provide a support for this driver software.
If the scan is successful, please turn the printer off and restart the computer. Once the computer is back on, turn on the printer, and then try to start the scan from the control panel again. If you continue to experience an issue, and the printer is connected to the network, please verify that the scanner is selected in the network scanner selector by following the steps below:
Cannot get this mac to recognize the printer. Rest printing system and I cannot add any new printers--nothing appears in the printer list when you type in the search box and everything is greyed out. There are no files in the library/printers folder at all. Everything was working fine until the other day when I started getting "filter failed" errors--no software updates at all. There are no printer drivers in the printer list at all. I've gone through this BS many times (because Macs haha) having to reset and reinstall canon drivers etc, but this time it's different. Used different printer cables and a brand new one as well. Seems like a total failure of the printing system.
As to why it would just stop working, all I can think of is that it is either compatibility with software, or just the printer itself. So, contact Canon and see if it is something going on that they are are of (use the second link in my first reply).
If nothing above is successful, then contact Apple and ask to perform a screensharing session with them. That way they can see this firsthand from you perspective, and how to go about fixing this issue:
Doesn't help me at all. I've reinstalled those drivers multiple times and they do not work. This is an Apple problem as far as i can tell, or Canon isn't making new updates because they don't want to deal with Apple, which I totally get (because apple is the absolute worst). What makes no sense is that this was a closed environment--I don't know how this could have happened unless it was something in the OS itself.
Thanks for your help. Checked and according to Apple it's not on the list of supported printers. Not sure how it just decided to stop working though. I guess I'm out of luck. I just bought this printer last year.
I love Canon printers. I have an MF236n which I use for printing and scanning. My old computer finally died after 16 years so I bought a new Dell Inspiron 3891. I can't get my printer to work. Everybody keeps saying to trash the Canon and buy a Dell printer, but I really like the Canon. Isn't there some software or driver that can be installed so it works with Dell computers. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I have an Image Class MF236n printer connected by usb to my laptop running Windows 11. I have had the printer for several years with no problems. I recently tried to print a document and got a pop up message that says "printer in Error State". No error code, no message on the printer itself. I downloaded a fresh driver, turned off and unplugged the printer for 5 minutes, restarted and still get the same message. Can anyone help?
If the printer is not displaying an error but the computer gives you a generic error message, you can try removing the connection for the printer and then Trying a reinstall of the recommended drivers.
You can press the Windows key and the letter R key at the same time on your keyboard. In the run box that appears, you can type in devmgmt.msc and click OK. In the window that comes up, click on the option for Universal Serial Bus controllers at the bottom. You can right click on the USB printing support option for the printer and then select the option to uninstall the device. Once it is gone, you can disconnect the USB cable for the printer.
You can now try to download and reinstall the recommended drivers from our support site using the link HERE. Wait until the setup prompts you before you reconnect the printer to the computer with the USB cable.
We have 3 of these printers in our office and the printing function is fine but when scanning using the software app for Windows 10 and gives a error when trying to scan off feeder on all 3 printers. It will advise to place originals in feeder when there is no paper jam and paper is aligned fine. All firmware is up to date on printer. We have uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled using canon's webpage for current drivers. Unsure what needs to be done. The settings are put on Feeder currently but was on Auto and gave errors when trying to use Auto. When we changed to Feeder it worked for one day. USB cable has been replaced as well.
We are having the same issue with the same model and slightly different models at 18 different locations. Also using Windows 10 Pro, USB connected, Using the scan utility v 1.11 and 1.20. All Windows updates are current and use printer drivers from the website.
