ETSprovides guidance on setting score requirements for the TOEFL Essentials test, including a concordance table for institutions to compare TOEFL Essentials scores with TOEFL iBT scores and Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels. By extension, institutions will be able to align TOEFL Essentials scores with IELTS scores using the TOEFL iBT and IELTS score comparison tool.
The TOEFL Essentials test and the TOEFL iBT test can be used to meet English-language requirements for university admission decisions or other program requirements. The two tests provide high-quality options for a wide range of applicants, potentially expanding your applicant pool.
To make it easier for institutions to compare scores, we developed the score comparison tables below for both the overall band score and the section band scores of the TOEFL Essentials test. The tables also provide the mapping of TOEFL Essentials and TOEFL iBT test scores to the proficiency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference.
The TOEFL Essentials overall band score is calculated as the average of the four section band scores. The overall band score ranges from 1 to 12 in increments of 0.5, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The TOEFL iBT total score is calculated as the sum of the four section scores and it ranges from 0 to 120 in increments of 1.
TOEFL iBT section scores give you even more insight into your applicant's abilities and can help you see whether a test taker demonstrated the skills that are most important to your program or institution.
ETS does not recommend using these tables as the only resource to set cut scores. The TOEFL program provides the Guidelines for Setting Useful Score Requirements for the TOEFL iBT Test (PDF) to help institutions set useful and relevant score requirements.
The mapping of TOEFL iBT scores and CEFR levels is based on an initial standard-setting exercise with educators, and subsequent analyses of test scores to address feedback from universities and teachers of English about the levels of performance in an academic setting.
The TOEFL iBT test provides the highest measurement precision at language-proficiency levels B2 and C1, which are typical requirements for admissions in higher-education institutions. Test takers with very high scores are likely to be able to perform at CEFR level C2.
Institutions can accept both the TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Essentials tests for the same purposes, including university admissions. To make sure your score requirements are aligned, visit Setting Score Requirements for TOEFL Essentials.
By taking the TOEFL test, you can gauge your level of English across the four key skill areas and identify your strengths and weaknesses. This is useful not only for evaluating your skills but also for identifying areas where you could improve to move forward both professionally and personally.
We will be talking about the TOEFL score range for each skill section. If you choose to take the internet-based test, otherwise known as the TOEFL iBT, your test will be scored centrally by a combination of computer and human raters.
Please note that although each section is worth the same number of marks, there are a different number of questions in each section according to the difficulty of the skill being tested.
However, the score you will see on your TOEFL score report will not be your raw score but rather your scaled score between 0 and 30. So, your raw score will be converted to a scaled score that you will see in your results.
Unfortunately, there is no exact chart to calculate your score and convert it to a scaled score because ETS uses different calculations each time depending on the difficulty of each exam. If many candidates get a high score in the Reading section, for example, it would mean that the task is easy. So, even if you get a raw score of 40 in the Reading section, your scaled score will be lower than what it could have been in case of a difficult task.
The even weighting across the four sections means that it is possible to get a good overall score by compensating for your weaker skills with a higher score in your stronger skills. Your final score will be a combination of your individual scores, though your score report will include the detail of your score breakdown. This is important to bear in mind if you intend on using your score for professional or academic purposes.
Scores are awarded on a scale from 310 to 677 for the first three sections of the test. The Writing section is scored separately, on a scale from 0 to 6, and does not make up part of your final score.
The first thing to remember is that a good TOEFL score is the score that you set out to achieve, or the score that you need to fulfil your goals. There is no TOEFL passing score so you cannot fail the exam.
You can access your score online through your online ETS account or through the TOEFL app and you can print a PDF score report. If you prefer to receive a paper copy of your score report, you will receive your score by mail around 11 days after the test.
You can have additional test reports sent to institutions within the limit of two years following your test date (period of validity). The request can be done on your ETS account, by mail, or fax. You will have to pay an extra fee of $20 per report.
If you prefer requesting your score report by mail, you will need to complete the TOEFL iBT Additional Score Report Request Form and send it by mail with your payment to the following address:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL /ˈtoʊfəl/ TOH-fəl) is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by more than 11,000 universities and other institutions in over 190 countries and territories. TOEFL is one of several major English-language tests worldwide, including IELTS, Pearson Test of English (PTE), Duolingo English Test, Cambridge Assessment English, and Trinity College London exams.
TOEFL is a trademark of the Educational Testing Service (ETS), a private non-profit organization, which designs and administers the tests. ETS issues official score reports which are sent independently to institutions and are valid for two years following the test.[6]
In 1973, a cooperative arrangement was made between ETS, The College Board, and the Graduate Record Examinations board of advisers to oversee and run the program. ETS was to administer the exam with the guidance of the TOEFL board.[7]
The TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) measures all four academic English skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Since its introduction in late 2005, the Internet-based Test format has progressively replaced computer-based tests (CBT) and paper-based tests (PBT), although paper-based testing is still used in select areas. The TOEFL iBT test has been introduced in phases, with the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy in 2005 and the rest of the world in 2006, with test centers added regularly. It is offered weekly at authorized test centers. The CBT was discontinued in September 2006 and these scores are no longer valid. [citation needed]
Initially, the demand for test seats was higher than availability, and candidates had to wait for months. It is now possible to take the test within one to four weeks in most countries.[10] Now, people who wish to take the test create an account on the official website to find the closest place. In the past this test lasted 4 hours, today people can choose to take the test for around 3 hours.
The test consists of four sections, each measuring one of the basic language skills (while some tasks require integrating multiple skills), and all tasks focus on the language used in an academic, higher-education environment. Note-taking is allowed during the TOEFL iBT test. The test cannot be taken more than once every 3 days, starting from September 2019.[11]
One of the sections of the test will include extra, uncounted material. Educational Testing Service includes extra material to pilot test questions for future test forms. When test-takers are given a longer section, they should give equal effort to all of the questions because they do not know which question will count and which will be considered extra. For example, if there are four reading passages instead of three, then one of the passages will not be counted. Any of the four could be the uncounted one.
The TOEFL iBT Home Edition is essentially the same test as the TOEFL iBT. However, it is taken at home while a human proctor watches through a web camera (usually built-in to most laptops) and via sharing of the computer screen. The popularity of the Home Edition has grown during the COVID-19 pandemic as it has been the only option during lockdowns. Many students experience technical or security problems during the Home Edition tests. The ETS browser used to administer the test has been unreliable in many cases. Students who have their exams interrupted are not likely to get a refund or the chance to reschedule for a new test as the ETS has technical problems that are hard to document and the processing of a complaint is slow due to the popularity of the Home Edition and the number of complaints. If the test runs smoothly, the results are accepted by most companies and universities that accept the TOEFL iBT standard edition.
