I was looking for some recommendations for digital microscopes that are easy to use for students to be able to explore and take pictures with. Preferably one that connects to Chromebooks. There are a lot of affordable (for a school) choices out there and it hard to narrow down. Are there features people wish they had? What megapixel should I be looking for? Any advice would be appreciated.

Suggestions are really dependent on what exactly you plan to use the microscope for. Your first choice will likely be between a compound microscope (used for looking at things at the cellular level) or a stereo microscope (aka dissection microscope; used to magnify a three-dimensional view of a specimen).

I have a couple of digital microscopes like in the link below. They are available from multiple sources but I believe they are all the same - the only difference I believe is the price. They work good with the camera app on my Chromebook. You could get one and see if it fulfills your needs.

This is a really great microscope for general and hobby use! I have had TOMLOV DM602 Pro 10.1" HDMI Digital Microscope since August and have used it a few time to take photos and video. I bought to use to take photos of two very different objects, coins and carnivorous plants. Great for closeups and full coin imaging. Connects easily via HDMI to televisions for greater magnification. Takes photos easily too!

Soldering was the main reason I purchase this but the additional "D" lens is such a great feature for exploring features of tiny insects and plants in great detail. I even found a parasite on the fruit fly specimen that came with the microscope. Yes it comes with several specimen of insects and plants, normal things that you'll see everyday but under a microscope it's a whole different level.

A must for anyone interested into insects. It is lightweight and portable. The internal rechargeable battery means you dont need power. It runs entirely on 5V USB. I can run this item for hours of a jump starter or battery bank. The 10 inch screen is perfect and the 25 MP camera provides great resolution. A little hint, get the macro lens! The picture shows the bee at 4x digital zoom. It goes all the way to 8x. You simply press the left or right arrows on the monitor to activate.

I can not find the vendor or any general driver for mac. I tried to install manycam, as someone suggested here: -webcam-support-limited-by-apples-uvc-driver-partially-solved/?page=7 - it gave the same result as 'Photo Booth'/Facetime, but now with the message "unknown error".

Almost everything point in the direction that UVC cameras, _video_device_class should just work under mac. I did found it written somewhere that it should not be expected that very old UVC cameras could still work. Many people have trouble controlling their UVC cameras(focus, ...), but I just want an image.

Apparently the microscope came with software on a small CD. I do not have any CD drive, so I threw it out long time ago. Also - I do not know if there is anything for mac on the CD!? -or anything useful!? I am unable to find it anywhere online.

I am glad to say my low expectations on the $25 Jiusion digital microscope were thoroughly exceeded. In this cheap little device, I discovered a novel and fun alternative approach to the common methods of making close-up images, although admittedly not without a little extra work on the software side of things to produce a share-worthy result.

I found the digital microscope while browsing Amazon, and its form factor made me curious. Shaped and designed to be held like a Dremel tool, the little scope has a ring light attached to the tip and comes with a stand for hands-free operation. A dial on its side is labeled 40x-1000x, and I don't know if those claims are accurate, but I can say the range is both wide and able to get very close.

Operation of the scope is very simple, although not easy to master by any means. Focusing is done by physically moving your subject nearer or further from the tip of the scope or vice versa. A steady hand is needed to get good results, although the stand can be used to set up a shot without holding the scope or your macro subject. A shutter button on the side allows for one-handed operation.
