In 2013 SP1, the PowerTools specifically name the netTcp endpoint as the one to use when connecting.
That could probably be made configurable, if you wanted to use a different one.
Are you really looking to use SSL when connecting to the Core Service, or just when communicating between the client and server?
The latter can be configured independently and as long as the netTcp option is left alone the PowerTools will still work (but not use SSL when loading items).
