I organized my 1st bicycle race in 1980 and
1st 5K in 1987. Organized and scored
well over 100 events, finally quit scoring
running races in 2017 and last bike race in 2019,
the last Greenville Criterium. Got rained on
1st event and last event, quit because got
tired of that, canceling and rescheduling
outdoor events because of hurricanes, snow
and even forest fires.
In 2013 Ron Ayers Motorsports began selling
radio control cars made by Traxxas. They
had an outdoor dirt track and held races. I
saw a disabled Vet in wheelchair roll himself
into position, and he was able to compete on
equal basis to everyone else, cool!
So bought up a bunch of electric RC "rally"
cars, figured how to race and score, and began
looking for large indoor carpeted rooms.
Found those, but no one willing to let us use for free,
and shelved the project.
This year, one of my PCC instructors,
Charles Griffin, informed me that his wife Lynn was
diagnosed with ALS and losing the ability to move rapidly. Told him if he
could secure the
big room in Goess Student Center I would put on a RC event to benefit her and
help with their high
medical bills. He did, and we will hold an event on February 23, 8 races in 2
hours, allowing
up to 56 "drivers" to compete.
Sponsorship goal is 8 Gold Sponsors at $500
Donation to NC ALS Association and 16 at $250
donation. All of these will get custom
painted cars to race, along with their business logos,
the remaining 32 slots available to anyone
at $35 each. There will be no online registration but
those interested in driving a car can email
me at afs...@gmail.com. I will be happy to
visit any
business interested in sponsoring a
car.
