Thereis a strip across the top of the base showing disc access status, battery indicator etc, power switch, then the WiFi indicator and some media indicators which are also keys (play, pause, prev. next.) which all light up blue, and get 'bluer' once 'pressed' (no physical button). The WiFi indicator no longer lights up. I'm unsure whether this is also a 'key', but nothing happens if it is 'pressed'.

When I had windows installed, I could raise and switch off the card via windows with no problems.I have since removed windows, and do not wish to reinstall it just to raise the WiFi card every time it is switched off in Ubuntu.

So, my question is, since there appears to be no resolution for this directly, as in having Ubuntu being able to hardware unblock it, is there a way to map the FN key the laptops' built in keyboard had, to my USB keyboard, and how. Or is there a way to access the built in media "buttons" (the strip across the top of the laptop) to be able to have Ubuntu recognise the WiFi "button" (if it is indeed a "button")?

With this premise, I'll guess that fn+wifi sends a signal directly to your hardware to toggle your wifi card off and on. Running windows or linux or whatever isn't ever going to affect this cause and effect relationship.

I don't have a clue on this part of your question. If you could do it windows (mind, without using the keyboard..), then theoretically it's possible in linux. You just need to hope the kernel module supporting your wifi card supports this, and then that someone has written ui software to take advantage of the feature.

I realise this is an old post but my answer might help others. I broke my keyboard and use a usb keyboard now. The problem I had was that the wifi toggle was last 'off' before the keyboard stopped working. I fixed the problem by going into the bios (I had to pres ESC and then F10 on my laptop but it depend on what computer you have). I then pressed F9 to reset the values to default. F10 to exit and save. This set the switch back to the default postion of on and now my problem is fixed! Took months for me to work out this relatively simple solution.

I have a HP 15-d005tu laptop. The keyboard has suddenly stopped working when I connect to Wifi, but starts working when the airplane mode is turned on. When I connect to wifi I have to use the on-screen keyboard which really slows my work. Please help.

I am facing this problem since last year. As a solution, I updated the keyboard driver but it didn't help. I even used System Restore and it helped with the keyboard problem but not for a longer duration. Then I left doing anything and was using onscreen keyboard whenever necessary.

My WiFi was not working beforee this problem occured. I had to change the Wifi Adaptor. That is the only hardware change I have done, nothing else, and there was no software changes ever done on my laptop.

I will be following the steps you have recommended and will let you know about the results.

Thank you.

Some days back, I faced a new problem in my laptop. The audio was not working. I played a video file and there was no sound. I checked for the speakers in the component/ hardware test and the speakers were fine. But still there was no audio on playing any video files or games.

I have updated the BIOS as recommended by you. But i didn't found the drivers for Keyboard. Under the Keyboard drivers there are drivers for Alps touchpad, Synaptics touchpad. So what should I do for the Keyboard drivers. And also note that after updating the BIOS the problem is still there with the keyboard. It doesn't work on connecting with the wifi and also it doesn't work when the Airplane Mode is off. I have to always keep the Airplane Mode on to make sure the keyboard works.

I have just updated the Drivers for audio and BIOS. Please note that I didn't found the drivers for Keyboard. Under the Drivers: Keyboard, there are 3 drivers, one each for Alps Touchpad, Wireless Button and Synaptics Touchpad. So, what should i do for the keyboard drivers? Please reply.

I have an HP Envy M6 TouchSmart and my laptop keyboard does not work when WiFi is ON, and only works when it is in AirPlane Mode. I was able to get an external keyboard to work just fine. I completely wiped the drive and installed Windows 10, installed all Windows Updates, and installed the HP Assistant and downloaded drivers and updates there, but the laptop keyboard only works in AirPlane Mode, and does not work when WiFi is on.

I have uninstalled the HID keyboard, the WiFi card, updated drivers, and none of this worked. Any suggestions on resolving this issue. I can't walk around with an external keyboard and the touchscreen keyboard does not open correctly.

What recommendations do you have for resolving? I was thinking about replacing the keyboard, but it seems to work just fine... all the keys, when WiFi is disable or turned off and the PC is in AirPlane Mode.

In Device Manager, uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software:

In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.

Click View and select Show Hidden Devices.

Click the arrow next to Keyboards, right-click the keyboard device name, then select Uninstall to remove the device from Windows.

Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled.

Restart the notebook. Right-click Start (), select Shut down or sign out, then select Restart.

Wait for the computer to restart and open Windows.

1.) Turn off the computer.

2.) Disconnect all connected devices and cables such as Personal Media Drives, USB drives, printers, and faxes. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.

3.) Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until Recovery Manager opens.

4.) Under I'd like to identify any problems, click on Run Computer Checkup.

5.) Now select the radial button next to Open a Command Prompt and then click on next.

6.) In the Command Prompt Windows please type and check the functionality of all the keys if not then it's for sure hardware issue. So contact HP Technical Support and get the keyboard replaced/repaired.

7.) If it works fine in Command Prompt then, try creating a different User Account with Administrator privilege and check the functionality of the keyboard.

8.) If nothing works out then please try system recovery to set the NB back to its Factory Original settings.

I did confirm that all keys on the laptop keyboard worked in the cmd window as well as in airplane mode in Notepad. Following one of the reboots to update the keyboard drivers, the equals (=) sign was scrolling as if it was stuck... I switched between airplane mode and Wifi, and it stopped and did not recur. Switching between the two modes seems to help also when the external keyboard stops working.

My theory is that the issue is not actually a keyboard issue.. but a WiFi driver issue. I am using Win 10 Home and I believe I have the Qualcom Atheros QCA9565 802.11 bgn WiFi Adapter. I will try to uninstall it and reinstall it, and then find the native driver for that hardware. If you can send me the HP recommended driver via a link, that would be greatly appreciated.

Also, can you send instructions on updating the BIOS... never did that before but saw it as a suggestion on another post... if the WiFi driver does not resolve it. Thanks and I am awaiting your response.

First... I connected directly to an Ethernet connection and was able to connect to the internet and use the keyboard without any issues all day long, it continued to work. The B, N, and 7 keys (7 on 10 key only) all displayed double key strokes though when typing. The following is what they did... b=bg, n=nh, 7=78. When I turned on WiFi, the laptop keyboard became disabled again and I could only use an external keypboard. The touchscreen virtual keyboard also worked for the first time when connected to the Ethernet connection as well, which did not work when connected to WiFi.

Any suggestions on resolving the WiFi issue that is creating my keyboard issue? I will be rebooting later today to see if the keyboard issue goes away or the key problem changes. I will also test the keyboard issue with an external keyboard to see if it only happens with the laptop keyboard. If so, I will see about disconnected and reconnecting or replacing the keyboard altogether. Please advise.

I read the post. Thanks for the response. If you've tried all the steps from the previous post and the issue persists, then please contact Hp phone support in this regard for further assistance. As @A4Apollo is out for the day, I am responding on his behalf. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Kudos to you for that.

Yesterday my keyboard suddenly stopped working while I was watching a youtube video. I realized it when I tried to turn the volume up using the arrow key. This was weird for me as touchpad was working flawlessly. I restarted my laptop and ran UEFI diagnostics > components test > keyboard. Every single key was working as it should out of the box. No problems there. What I tried next : (my wifi was on in the entire process)
