Inthis area, you can play online chess easily and free of charge as a guest. Set up a new game with your own mode and challenge other players to a game, or accept a match offer from the available list. On our website, you can play the classic board game of chess against the computer, friends or any other random opponent. If you choose the chess program, then the game duration and skill level can be configured by the chess computer at different levels, from easy to difficult. The game level will be matched and configured specifically for you. By training with the chess computer, you can retract a move that you have just made. We will not provide any further explanation of how to play chess at this point, as we assume that you are already familiar with the rules of this royal game. If you do not know the rules of chess, then we would recommend that you read them in order to obtain a basic understanding of this strategic board game. In Chess, the goal is to win by checkmating your opponent's king. Chess is played with two players. To get started, enter a name for yourself (ex: "chess-player-100") and a room name. We use the standard rules of chess, as documented here. There is currently no way to forfeit or declare a draw, though you may always end or restart the game by selecting the room settings button at the top of the screen.

For the next 24 hours, all rated games played on Lichess with a minimum time control of 3 min + 2 sec, or equivalent such as 5+0, and lasting at least 15 moves will count towards the FIDE 100 World Record Attempt for the most chess games played online and offline in one day!

My friend and I can't seem to get it working. He has sent me a challenge and I see it in Game Center. I click the challenge in Game Center and then click "Play Now" but that just opens Chess.app to a new game between me and the computer.

Click "Start" and you should see a Multiplayer Game panel appear. Click the Invite Friends button, and then enter the player's full name or nickname to invite him or her. Then click next to establish the invite and connection, and start the game.

I did read the question. You are mentioning using Game Center as the means for establishing the connection, and I'm suggesting you use the Chess program instead. When you launch Chess from within Game Center it will load into the Player vs Computer mode you described. Instead, once you have a Game Center account and are logged in, open Chess separately and use its "New Game" option in the File menu to choose Game Center Match where you can invite and accept challenges from friends.

There are no challenges in the New Game panel in Chess. This is why I'm going through Game Center. I can only send an invite out from Chess. I have already been sent an invite by my friend. I cannot act on HIS invite. Both Chess and Game Center even have a 1 badge on their app icons in the Dock, but Chess has no way of seeing this invite.

You can organize a private tournamentto play Chess in a group and invite up to 512 players. You can choose between the Swisssystem, Round Robin, Single Elimination, Double Elimination, or casual modes.It's an excellent tool for friends, virtual team building, or schools.

I started playing chess with Fran Farrell about ten years ago, shortly after I learned he had been diagnosed with ALS. At the time when we began playing, we were more acquaintances than friends, but regular play brought us closer together. After I heard about his diagnosis, I proposed that we start playing as often as we could, as I knew that ALS would eventually wreak havoc on his body, but his mind would remain sharp and alert, something that you needed when playing chess. I started playing chess when I was five years old. My mum was trying to find some talent in me, so I did many different activities back then. Chess has been in my family. My aunt was once a woman Polish Champion. I can't really say why I chose chess. I was really fascinated by the game, I enjoyed playing and training, and I got better and better. And this passion still lasts today.
