Thanks, Charles! I thought it had to be equivalent to the roof gravel we see in Vancouver, but it seemed so strangely sparse. I guess high winds are less likely to take larger rocks away than smaller pebbles, and these houses were all in areas of high desert winds, so it makes sense.
The depth or lightness of shade possessed by the roof indicates the times of day at a glance. Basically, if you stare at it from a fixed position at a small distance (maybe a pathway approaching the property) you are essentially viewing hundreds of small sundials again a white backdrop. You would eventually become adept at seeing roughly what time it was as you approach the house. Wooo!
I saw them all over Europe and the Alpine ares. Does the heating/Sun on the rocks keep the snow off or building up on the roof? We live on the beach in NW Fl, we get sun E to W all day. Would rocks help?
I remember them as a kid in the 60s in California. I went online to find some pics of them to show my daughter but this was the only picture I could find. (thank you for posting) I remember it being on a lot of houses and it seemed to me it was for the fad effect mostly.
The first 5.13 in Wyoming (originally rated 12d by Greg Collins, but folks in the 80s didn't know how strong they were). The Cranner Rock Roof Crack is on my short list of the best routes I've ever done. It consists of super steep climbing up a finger and hand crack to a difficult boulder problem pulling over a roof. Good gear abounds and a bolt protects the crux. The last 20 feet is 5.11 fingers in a corner. Sport climbers should not hesitate to get on this route. It is very easy to protect and the climbing is sequential, pumpy, and pretty straight forward.
North side of Cranner Rock. There is a big overhang formed by a huge block that cleaved off the cliff which has split into a few pieces. The Roof Crack is on the right side of this overhang, left of Geophysical. There is a bolted dihedral (possibly 5.14) between the two routes.
Small cams and stoppers protect this very well. There is a great 3.5 friend or blue camalot placement before the roof boulder problem. A bolt protects the crux (your feet are about 1 foot above it while doing the crux moves). This was placed to keep the rope out of the crack as you move higher. Bring 2 or 3 finger sized pieces for the vert crack above the crux. It has a 2 bolt anchor with rings. There is also a single bolt you can rap off of from the summit if you want to set up a TR.

A built-up roof (BUR), sometimes called a tar-and-gravel roof, is a tried-and-true style of flat roof. Here, alternating layers of roofing felt (usually fiberglass) and hot-applied asphalt are combined to create a long-lasting roof system.
A layer of gravel, or small stones, is applied on top of the final coating of asphalt to protect the roof from the elements, including ultraviolet (UV) rays and hail. The gravel is embedded into the top coat of asphalt (known as a flood coat), which helps the gravel stay in place. (Source: American Society of Home Inspectors.)
BUR aggregate is usually pea-sized, about a quarter-inch thick, and is used to impart the Class A surface burning designation in accordance with mandatory requirements for ASTM E108, UL790 or CAN/ULC S107M. (Sources: Absolute Roof Solutions, WATERPROOF! Magazine.)
Modified bitumen roofs are a mix of asphalt and rubber with a layer of gravel embedded in the top layer of material during manufacture to provide UV protection. No additional gravel on the roof is required. (Source: Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia.)
Ballast is a different style of gravel, which is applied to single-ply roofing systems. Although the primary purpose of ballast is to weigh down the roofing materials, it also offers similar protective benefits as described above.
Ballast is commonly used with roofs made of tar-and-gravel roof alternatives, including ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) single-ply flat roofs.
Ballast is different from BUR protective gravel. Ballast stones are usually one to two inches thick and applied more generously than on a built-up roof. The heavier stones provide substantial protection against wind gusts. (Source: Roofing Southwest.)

Contractors and builders use gravel on flat roofing for two primary reasons; the first is to protect the underlying layer of roofing materials on built-up roofs (BURs), and the second is to secure or weigh down the roofing material, as is the case with single-ply flat roofs.
Built-up roofs or BURs (also called a tar and gravel roof) is a well-established and popular style of flat roof that is made up of alternating layers of roofing felt or fiberglass and asphalt that is applied with heat, which combines to make a long-lasting sturdy roofing system.
