DivX 6 expanded the scope of DivX from including just a codec and a player by adding an optional media container format called "DivX Media Format" ("DMF")[13] (with a .divx extension) that includes support for the following DVD-Video and VOB container like features. This media container format is used for the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec.
This new DivX Media Format also came with a "DivX Ultra Certified" profile, and all "Ultra" certified players must support all DivX Media Format features. While video encoded with the DivX codec is an MPEG-4 video stream, the DivX Media Format is analogous to media container formats such as Apple's QuickTime. In much the same way that media formats such as DVD specify MPEG-2 video as a part of their specification, the DivX Media Format specifies MPEG-4-compatible video as a part of its specification. However, despite the use of the ".divx" extension, this format is an extension to the AVI file format. The methods of including multiple audio and even subtitle tracks involve storing the data in RIFF headers and other such AVI hacks which have been known for quite a while, such that even VirtualDubMod supports them. DivX, Inc. did this on purpose to keep at least partial backward compatibility with AVI, so that players that do not support the new features available to the .divx container format (like interactive menus, chapter points and XSUB subtitles) can at least play that primary video stream (usually the main movie if the DMF file contains multiple video streams like special features like bonus materials). Of course, the DivX codec and tools like Dr. DivX still support the traditional method of creating standard AVI files.
DivX has released a command line interface (CLI) for the divx264 encoder used in the DivX Converter as beta, free for non-commercial use.[22] To complement the CLI divx264 encoder released on DivX Labs, DivX has also released a DivX AAC encoder CLI as a Windows beta binary.[22] Finally, DivXMKVMux has been released as a free Windows CLI through DivX Labs with documentation on the DivX Developer Portal; DivX describes the release as a reference mux to demonstrate DivX Plus MKV extensions like World Fonts and Smooth FF/RW.[23]
I did the cleansing suggested. And saw the removal of a number of files. I then found another post by #Ashtree which called for the removal of yet another divx file. I did so, but found the file to be non-existent.
In order to properly 'see' these files - and any other like them - you need to open the Finder and set your VIEW to-> Columns; then set the ARRANGE to-> Date Modified. This allows you to see different venues of existing DivX or divx files.
My problem is that I am trying to render out in divx or xivd compression but in After Effects 6.5 it doesnt have the codec to. I can import them but there is no option to choose to render in DIVX or XVID codec.
I currently have the K lite codec with nearly everything installed including divx and xvid, I have even tried to enable the codec from FFshow, but still there is no option to render out in DIVX or xvid.
... but when I view the "Page Info" Media tab, the content type for the embedded avi file is shown as "video/divx" and when I click on "Manual Install" in the Plugin Finder Service I am sent to -plus
You can check the proper mimetypes your divx plugin will handle by opening about:plugins in Firefox (enter it in the address bar) and finding it in the list. Copied from _or_audio_does_not_play
I don't know a whole lot about HTML coding but both links define the MIMEtype as "video/divx" so you need a plugin that will handle that type. It would help if you could open the Firefox about:plugins page from the address bar, then copy the contents and paste it here so we can see which MIMETypes are handled by the "DivX VOD Helper Plug-in" as well as the filename for that plugin.
A long shot, but if that If that plugin doesn't handle "video/divx" then the latest DivX Web Player plugin may have been copied to the Firefox\plugins folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\plugins by default, on Windows 7 64-bit). Firefox no longer scans that location (ref.). To enable any plugins in the Mozilla Firefox\plugins folder, you could open about:config from the Firefox address bar, double-click the plugins.load_appdir_plugins preference to change it's value to true and then restart Firefox. See Windows Media or other plugins stopped working after Firefox update for details.
With MPEG4-Part 2 started this weird age of many companies making their own implementation of these two codecs resulting in a few new container formats that were only used by these specific implementations f.e. RealMedia's .rmf/.rmvb or DivX's altered version of AVI, .divx.RealMedia even made their own codec again based on h.263. A horrible age of a ton of different formats that needed their own browser plugins and players because they weren't fully compatible to each other, either because of their container or slight alterations to either h263 or MPEG-4 Part 2.
Though it still was an MPEG4-Part 2 implementation after the rewrite and became a pretty popular codec that was supported by a lot of DVD players at the time. Some developers of DivX went on and made the open source version called Xivd (that used AVI instead of .divx) that gained a lot of popularity in the movie "pirating" scene and was their standard for encoding videos for several years until h.264 came along. Though even after h.264 was readily in use by consumers Xvid was still used for a few years because of it's good understanding in the scene. It became somewhat of an art to encode movies in Xvid because of all those sophisticated encoding options available in the Xvid encoder.Xvid had a few advanced features that weren't implemented in DivX which made videos encoded with those feature in-compatible with DivX certified devices.
DivX creates products and services designed to improve the experience of media. Our first product offering was a video compression-decompression software library, or codec, which has been actively sought out and downloaded over 240 million times since January 2003, including over 80 million times during the last twelve months. We have since built on the success of our codec with other consumer software, including the DivX Player application, which is distributed from our website, www.divx.com. We also license our technologies to consumer hardware device manufacturers and certify their products to ensure the interoperable support of DivX-encoded content. In addition to technology licensing to consumer hardware device manufacturers, we currently generate revenue from software licensing, advertising and content distribution.
I couldn't find a way of telling the Roxio suite to use DivX 10 instead of the Roxio version, and so .DivX files or .AVI files decoded by the DivX codec [dib; divx; dx50; iv32; iv50, etc] are barred in MyDVD once you install DivX 10.
