Belly Dance History In the Making!
Shimmy Mob, a "Flash Mob" type event, the largest event of its kind by
the number of geographical territory covered in one day and raising
funds for Women’s and Children’s shelters in participating
communities.
OBJECTIVES
To Promote Belly Dance As An Art Form And The Belly Dance
Communities.
Participating communities will receive free listing of local belly
dance related events leading up to World Bellydance Day, May 12th on
the Shimmy Mob website events page. We encourage all participants to
make these events by donation and give the funds raised to the
designated charities in their area
To Give Back To The Communities!
Our goal is to give back to the community and help women and children
and shelters that help them and similar organizations in participating
local areas by promoting and furthering their causes.
We encourage participating cities to create fundraising events during
the month of May and donate to the local women and children shelters.

We are grateful for all businesses that provide support to this
project with donations, location for rehearsals and performances,
fundraising contest prizes, etc and in return Shimmy Mob will give
free advertising on the Shimmy Mob website for one full year or longer

1. Register and Order Your Shimmy Mob Kit
You can register once there is a City Team Leader established in your
area and the city will appear on the registration form. If you want to
participate but there is no leader and you don't want to be the City
Team Leader, you can help us find one in your city. The Kit you
order includes your Shimmy Mob t-shirt to wear on May 12th
(different from the previous Shimmy Mob event) and links to the
choreography breakdown that will be emailed to you ($35 CAD)
2. Learn the dance
You will receive an email with links to the choreography breakdown and
runthrough after you order the Shimmy Mob Kit.
3. Rehearse with your local participating instructors.
You will find times of rehearsal and location details online as they
become available, you will also be contacted by your CTL or TL
assistant of any updates. They will also let you know when it is time
for you to pick up your T-shirt from your City Team Leader
4. Let's break the record!! Spread the word to all you know. Dancers,
businesses, friends, family and all you know. More people know about
the event the better for all involved. Let's be the largest and widest
spread Bellydance event ever!

I have seen other groups doing flash mobs, how does one recognize a
Shimmy Mob group?
Good Question! Shimmy Mob will be easily identifiable as all the
dancers in the group will be wearing the official Shimmy Mob T-shirt
that includes the shimmymob.com website. Note that the t-shirt is a
different color every year so if you were part of the previous mob
your 2011 t-shirt will not work for 2012.
What is different about Shimmy Mob?
If it is not listed on this website, it is not a Shimmy Mob
event.There are many differences. One of the things that
differentiates Shimmy Mob for other dance mobs is that it works in
multiple locations internationally on the same day, same dance
routine, same music and t-shirt and for a community benefit. Refer to
How it Works in this page for more info.
Who can be part of Shimmy Mob?
Anyone that wants to and is able to learn a dance routine can. You
don't have to be a bellydancer nor an expert. The choreo is easily
adaptable to less experienced dancers.
What do I need to do to be part of Shimmy Mob?
Each dancer that participates in the Shimmy Mob performance NEEDS TO
be registered through www.shimmymob.com and order the Shimmy Mob kit.
this kit will include the video links to the choreography breakdown.
You will need to learn the dance.
How much dance experience do I need?
The goal for the 2012 Shimmy Mob dance is to make it accessible to
beginners and dancers of more advanced levels alike. The dance
routine may 'lappear' harder or easier than it is but it will be
easily learnable. Newer and less experienced dancers can easily learn
the dance with a bit of practice, some part can be simplified for the
new dancers. See where there are free live rehearsal sessions in your
area so you can get some extra practice and live feedback
Can I see the dance first before committing?
We don't want to spoil the surprise. The dance will not be public
before May 12th. Only registered dancers can see it when they receive
the links to learning the choreography.
What do we wear for the performance?
On May 12th, ALL dancers in the Shimmy Mob MUST wear the official 2012
Shimmy Mob t-shirt. Shimmy Mob will mail your tshirt to your city
Team Leader who will in turn get it to you either directly or through
a designated group leader. You will also be notified after you
register on what the rest of the dress code is. You will not need to
buy any additional items.
Why a Shimmy Mob t-shirt? Why are we not wearing bellydance costumes
for this event?
There are many reasons, here a few:
1. It shows the world you are part of the team and the same event as
in the other participating cities.
2. Not all dancers have a costume, costumes are expensive for those
who may not own one
3. It is a lot more effective and memorable to the public for all to
have the same outfit and remember that you were part of Shimmy Mob
Why is the music not included as part of the kit?
As much as we would love to include the music, we are not licenced to
sell music nor authorized to distribute it due to copyright laws. It
is possible you already have the music in your repertoire. However, we
have chosen to do the choreography to unedited music available on
iTunes for a minimal 0.99 cents and this goes directly to the music
artists.
How can I learn the dance?
Once registered, you will receive the choreography videos via link
online. The videos will have the breakdown of the dance so you can
learn it on your own. Many team leaders and registered intstructors
will be offering free live rehearsal sessions. They can assist you.
Why do I have to pay $35 to dance?
The $35 is the cost for the tshirt, operating and admin costs of this
event. NO ONE makes money from these transactions, even the organizer/
producer pays for her own!!
What if I want to dance and can't afford to pay $35?
If that is the case, we suggest to find a sponsor. There are lots of
businesses that would be happy to sponsor for such a minimal amount
and great cause. The event is to promote bellydance AND the bellydance
events that will raise funds for charity connected to May 12th, 2012.
If you have someone fully sponsoring you, let us know and when they do
we will add their name or business to the sponsors page
Can I still dance at the May 12th, 2012 performance if I don't have
the t-shirt?
No, only registered dancers with the Shimmy Mob t-shirts are permitted
to dance. You must make sure to register to order yours. Through this
same registration you will also get access to the choreography and
instructional videos
I don't like to pay online, is there another payment method I can
use?
We do prefer you do register online in order to process your order
faster; however, if you want another payment method option, give us a
call 604-722-9545.
Is there a deadline? Why does the cost of the kit go up after Mar
31st?
There is a registration deadline - Mar 31st. With a 5 day late
registration allowance April 5th is the absolute FINAL deadline. The
price of the kits will increase to $50 after Mar 31st as the supplier
charges and shipping increase for rush orders.
What if the t-shirt doesnt fit? We provide a chart with measurements
as given to us from the supplier to make sure you order is the correct
size. Make sure you refer to the chart on your registration form
before selecting the size. There are two styles of shirts to choose
from. Be on the safe side and order a little bigger rather than
smaller for the fitted styles. We want you to look good!
How is the money for the charities raised?
All City Team leaders are encouraged, together with the participating
communities and teachers, to help create events such as haflas,
shows, lessons, pledges in the month of May 2012. Profits from these
events are to be donated DIRECTLY to the charity organization in each
area by the registered City Team Lead
