Hi Gil,

I just wanted to let you know that I got a chance to test your one document launcher project today - and like Tracy - mine did not work either.  It put me into the "download QuickTime" loop.

Please note that this does NOT happen if you use any version of QT earlier than 7.6.4 and it does not happen if you use any service pack earlier than 3.  It is only the combo of 7.6.4 and Service Pack 3 that makes it happen - any deviation from those things and it works fine.

You had asked me to test it - so I thought I'd update you on the progress from here - I hope that helps.

Thanks Brian. This is helpful. I am using SP3 and QT 7.6.4 and can not replicate the issue. Machine specific? Not sure. Matt is looking into it. The key is the dialog that you get. It says "need qt", not "update qt." Thus, the launcher is not seeing that QT is installed. Not a version issue, but a presence issue.

The launcher was built ages ago, so it requires a bit of digging. We hope to have more by the end of the week.

Gil,

It's not machine specific here - I have it happening on two computers here, Tracy has it, and we have multiple customers (like almost 30 now) calling in with it.  It must be something machine specific on your computer - some setting that is different, I wonder.

Regarding the message - the message that is seen and the URL that it goes to to "update" are both set by me using the LAUNCHER settings in the EDITOR - they are not the generic iShell messages, they are the ones we are allowed to change.

IT's actually working as expected, just not detecting that QuickTime is installed - it keeps thinking it's not installed even after it is.

Hope that helps - thanks for your work on it!

Gil,

I haven't added anything to this thread before now as I've been a bit
busy of late, but as I also have a project that will not launch on XP
after the latest QT update, I can now add the following, in case it is
of any help.

Your "Launcher Issue" 1-doc file will not launch on my XP when QT is
7.6.4 - and i get the "This application requires QT..." and this is
the same whether I include the QT installers or just the download url
to Apple - same problem as everyone else has (except you guys up there?)

For my own project, which is somewhat more than 1 doc, I get a
slightly different reason for failure.
First, on starting the project, it's noticeable that the QT for
Windows installer opens and I get the message "A newer version of QT
is already installed. This installation cannot proceed while the newer
version of QT is installed." I then get the final screen of the QT
installer, showing there have been problems, so I click Finish and
then get an "iShell" error.. "There was a problem with QT
installation, or the installation was cancelled".

My programs are written on a Mac, using iShell 4.5r7 and Launcher
2.5. Testing on a mac running bootcamp with XP Pro with SP 3 and QT
7.6.4.

Going back to an earlier version of QT allows all of the above to run
properly, as does clicking the runtime icon inside the data folder (or
replacing the launcher icon with an alias of the runtime).

And a couple of extra points (just in case you've got time to read
this far....) your "LauncherIssue" program is a really insidious app!
Once it's running I can't stop it and can't remove it. I have to
reboot Windows before I can delete the file. And...(2). I'm still on
Mac OS 10.5.8 but of late I no longer get any iShell icons for my .xp
files, just a blank doc icon. Is this a common sight, or is it just me?

Denis,

This is the same problem - I think the only reason you're getting something different is because you're distributing a CD, so you'd never get the message to download - it would just use the CD installer - so yep - you have it too!  Welcome to the club. :)

In our case there is no installer on the disc / web - so we have them go to Apple's site to update - and they get a different message.

Denis,

Thanks for the update. We are looking into this issue.

RE the Launcher Issue 1 doc app: really, it will not exit via control-Q? Close window? You ran it in Mac as well?

Not sure why your Mac does not associate the .xp icons? On a Mac, you can get info on a file (like the xp file), choose open with... and when you choose iShell it should fix all xp icons.

FWIW, I use Color Finesse, and just downloaded the update today.
Looking thru the release notes, I found this:

" • Worked around a problem with QuickTime for Windows 7.6.4 which
would generate a misleading error message about needing an earlier
version if QuickTime."

Don't have any further information... so it's really FWIW.

you might call the color Finesse people and talk to their developer to
see what's up...

fyi
Along with the version problem there seems to be a few serious reported/known issues with QT 7.6.4 on the windows and mac side apparently
especially with video and audio related software - like the CS4 apps, adobe premiere and html embedded QT files

the version error seems limited to XP spk3 from what i've seen on the various forums
but the video problems seem to affect a wider range of OS's.

check these out:

and yes... color finesse problem sounds like the exact same error

eg. try a google search for this
