Boo, looks like it's $35 I forgot about that part.

Might I recommend you guys meet up at the new Hunt Library on NCSU's Centennial Campus? It is open to the public until 10PM and there are a variety of places for people to meet. What is the expected group size for this meeting? Students or faculty can reserve rooms in advance and I could arrange that. There are usually plenty of spaces available for drop-in meetings as well.

Hunt library is definitely a good place for technical meetup.

I agree that if folks can cope with the driving distance Hunt library would be vastly superior to the Morrisville county library, and I suggest Adam follow previous recommendations to "try to book it first, worry about consensus and cancellation later."

PS If you got the MSP430 Launchpad, let's try to do something with that!

Is space for twelve large enough? That's the largest room that can be booked for non-academic/faculty purposes.

I think the Earth Fair community room is off the list as it requires us to leave shortly after we would get there--8:30PM. They also have a lot of restrictions that I'm not sure we could or would want to accommodate.

The Hunt library looks a lot better and I don't work too far from there either.

The first few meeting there may shake out a few more places, so I'd be game to start at the Hunt Library. This may also work for the TAR group.

I suspect it might possibly work for TAR or the Arduino group, but not for both, especially if everybody and their dog has decided this is the  one important meeting to attend. There were around 10 people at the Arduino meeting the Saturday of the TechShop Wake. I can't speak for recent attendance at TAR meetings at TechShop.

So, unfortunately, my instincts tell me this may be too small.

Any chance of booking two 12-person rooms? :-)

PS If you're using Thunderbird or the like, notice that the "reply-list" dropdown defaults to "reply list", but what we need at the moment is "reply all."

Apparently, the maker space in Hunt Library is limited to use by faculty and staff, but there is a contact listed as the Emerging Technology Services Librarian. He might be able to swing something for our groups in distress.

Its limited to use by faculty, staff, and students because of the payment system....so if anybody is associated with NCSU, we could maybe use it.

I tried to print there and couldn't a few weeks ago.

But even just walking around you see people putting protoypes together just sitting at the tables, etc....besides, the makerspace area is tiny.

It would be a very cool place to hold a meeting.

Note that this is just a maybe. This isn't a meeting announcement, this
is an update on a possible place for a meeting.

I have the meeting room at Morrisville library reserved, but only till
8:45pm, as apparently it takes 15 minutes to leave before their closing
time of 9pm. :-)

Over to Grayson, who's working on an NCSU option.

I suggest we lock the final decision in by Wednesday night to get the
word out.

Hi Charlie,
To recap, you're also pursuing a meeting place at NCSU, apparently
one that could be used month after month. In my opinion a choice that
might serve for the long term would trump the Morrisville library, but
if it's a choice between one-time meeting places Morrisville is best for
folks getting there from all over.

But to catch up on the mail:

I'm thinking a capacity of 30 would be fine. The initial target is
7pm Monday the 6th for a couple hours, but of course the other group was
meeting on the 2nd Monday.

To give folks some idea of the geo tradeoffs here are some Google
Maps estimated driving distances and times. Some of these are obviously
optimistic wrt rush hour traffic.
TechShop of course refers to the old meeting place and "RH" is short
for "RedHat", that is, the part of NCSU/Centenial campus on Varsity
drive where RH's building is as an approximation of NCSU meeting places.

From ToDistance/driving time

NCSU/Centenial(RH) TechShop 13 miles/21 minutes
Downtown Durham (splat) TechShop 14 miles/22 minutes
Wake Forest (98/US1) TechShop 21 miles/25 minutes
RTP (147/I40) TechShop 9 miles/14 minutes

NCSU/Centenial Morrisville library 16 miles/26 minutes
Downtown Durham (splat) Morrisville library 16 miles/21 minutes
TechShop(RDU/RIP) Morrisville library 13 miles/17 minutes
Wake Forest (8/US1) Morrisville library 30 miles/33 minutes
RTP (147/I40) Morrisville library 10 miles/12 minutes

Hello,

The NC State Commercial Space Club has been meeting in the Fishbowl on Mondays, but the last meeting for the semester is this Monday (We are skyping with representatives from NASA CASIS).  I am not currently a student, but I could probably get the fishbowl booked for the next month or so.  My fellow club members might frown upon the location being used, so something else would have to be found by the fall semester.

Seth Hollar (head of the E-Garage) and Jason Lowe (Industrial and Systems Engineering lab director) might be good people to reach out to (especially if the group helped students get projects going).  If there is interest in that, I could reach out to them about it.

Thanks,
Charlie West

(This is in response to Grayson's msg today, which is included down at the bottom)

OK, decision time.

This is about the some replacement for either or both of the TechShop 1st and 2nd Monday meetings related to robotics and embedded computing "living on",  either separately, together, and with or without some connection to the area IEEE robotics and automation chapter.

From my perspective we should simply pick one location or other for Monday proceed from there.

The NCSU location has multiple advantages. There are now three or four separate possibilities for permanent regular meetings at NCSU that are being explored, so a get together there would naturally provide various comparison points for how convenient or inconvenient the drive is.

The Morrisville location has one advantage, which is of course driving time during rush hour. Being chased into the parking lot at 8:45 might be viewed as a good thing or a bad thing. :-)

What say you all?

(If you use  REPLY-ALL then your msg will go to both lists. If you use "reply" your msg will only go to the list you got this msg from and the folks on the other list won't see what you wrote. I'm not going to relay this time.)

My vote is for NCSU due to the proximity to the university community. I think we'll get members from the university and I think we might open up opportunities to collaborate with groups inside the university. They do some cool research there.

I would still happily attend the Arduino/embedded club meetings if they occurred at the Morrisville library, especially if meeting there was significantly more doable for other members.

As for the proposed club merger, I vote to keep the groups separate. I think that while robotics is a form of embedded computing, and the solving of robotics problems is educational for non-robotic pursuits, there are enough topics and people to keep both groups busy. If I could swing the extra time, I'd attend both, but since my projects of late have been skewing non-robotic, I've just been attending the embedded/Arduino.

Thanks, Pete, for your leadership, organization and general cat-herding.

Jeff :)

I will be working 1st Mondays until Aug. so this this meeting is out for me. Now I can make the 2nd Mondays. The Morrisville lib is just down the road from me so that would be nice, but if it is a onetime deal, I vote we look into what is good for the long term.

My 2 cents
