Unlike two of the three aforementioned institutions, Duke *could* be a
great team in a given year. I genuinely don't think that God himself could
coach Temple to greatness and I doubt Rice will ever do better than 6-5 any
more. 2001 was a flook. Rutgers *could*, given that they're a large state
university in a populous state, but it's going to take some freakish luck
on the order of 1993-1999 Virginia Tech for it to happen.

Duke, on the other hand, has a lot of natural advantages -- a great campus
for recruits to visit, membership in a good conference, prestige
academically, the chance to score Duke basketball tickets, and best of all,
Ted Roof himself. Oh, and the lemurs. Everyone likes lemurs.

I predict that Duke will routinely be going to bowls every year, starting,
oh, any year now.

Duke recently had like a 20 game losing streak
spanning three seasons. They did win two last
year, and they hammered the mighty Citadel 28-14!

And a dearth of boinkables.

We're talking football players. For most of them,
that is a problem.

There's that.

He only lost two heartbreakers last year, a new Duke
record. And if anyone thinks UCONN is now on a solid
foundation, they beat Duke by two points.

At home. With a lucky break. Solid like Jello!

Yeah, and Vermont will make the FF.

No one's claiming that UConn had any business winning that game, but
you guys just gift-wrapped it and gave it away. UConn is still new to
this level of football, and will win ugly and lose ugly. We barely
scraped by Duke, beat the Big East BCS representative Pitt, played a
tight game with 'Cuse, got shellacked by Georgia Tech, and killed
Toledo in the MC Bowl. That's what happens when your program is
growing. The most important thing is that UConn is building a winning
mindset...not giving away games like Duke did that September afternoon.

No, UConn is not "there" yet, but the strides made in just a few short
years in 1A competition are pretty decent, especially considering that
last year was our first as a full member of the Big East. We have a
dynamic coach, top-notch on-campus practice facilities being built, a
new stadium, rabid fan base, and a team that seems to have a 'can do'
attitude. Only a homer would say that Connecticut is "there", but
it's within reason to suggest that we are certainly on the right path.
This year is probably going to be a down year (6-5/3-4 Big East seems
to be the prevailing guess) because we have a team loaded with young
pups...but these young pups are bigger, faster and stronger than any
previous UConn recruiting class, and when they get some experience and
the post-Orlovsky QB mess is sorted out, then things will get fun
again. Think of what UConn football was only 5 or 10 years ago, watch
UConn - especially in 2006 and 2007, and then I dare you to tell me
there's no foundation.

I predict that UConn will go to a better bowl than FSU in the next 5 years.

Has something changed? When I lived in Durham from 1993 to 1998, there
certainly seemed to be more than a few.

If I were you, I wouldn't bet on what UVM's gonna do. You *still* owe me a
spleen over our last bet.

UConn will never be a FSU or other premier program like that: that
type of football culture doesn't exist in New England, we could never
pull in the primo recruits that a program like FSU cherry picks, and
the conference is too weak...but what UConn can become is a solid
program like BC. In fact, I'll be surprised if UConn is not *at least*
as good as BC on a year-in/year-out basis - given some more time for
the program to mature.

Here, take these two valium and call me in the morning.
Duke beat Clemson the week after Clemson beat Miami.
Clemson got caught looking past Duke and it ruined
their season. UCONN was a chippie field goal from not
going to the prestigious bowl game against Toledo.

Relatively speaking. Even MIT has some cuties.
