Hello,

Sadly, I'm another statistic...I was just laid off from my job. In
mid-June my boss told me that money was tight, and that I should take
a couple of days off til they can get some more money rolling in.
Here it is, July, and this has not happened. I cannot live on $0, so
I guess I will need to go the unemployment route til I can get a new
job. Here are my questions:

1) My boss has not filled out any paperwork to "lay me off", does he
need to?

2) Since I was told to "take a few days off" in mid-June, can I file
for unemployment benefits starting in mid-June?

3) Someone told me that I need to look for work once I apply for
benefits. Since I was hoping to go back to my original job, I haven't
been looking yet... Will this cause problems applying for benefits?
Will this mean that I can't get benefits for the two weeks of June?

4) How long (how many weeks) can I get benefits if I apply?

Thanks
Susan

There is a bunch of information here

https://www.ncesc.com/default.aspx

You need to be actively looking for work, so it is very unlikely that you
can claim for the past weeks. You need to file a claim and you cannot claim
benefits for the first week that you claim. To meet the looking for work
criteria most people are required to e-mail their resume to two positions
per week. I would recommend that you go to the umenployment office and file
your claim. You can file on line but your claim may need personal attention.
