New Summer Course on Chinese and Japanese Paintings
at UNC-CH

A new undergraduate course on Chinese and Japanese drawing and
painting will be offered at the Art Department, University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill on the second session of summer semester
(June 27-July 30, 1996).

The course, Art 68-001 (CALL# 41556): Chinese and Japanese
Painting (Second Session, Summer 1996 MTWRF, 9:45AM-01:00PM at
Hanes Art Center 214), is a three-credit hour class at
undergraduate level.

The instructor will teach basic skills and techniques of
traditional Chinese and Japanese painting (landscape, figures,
birds and flowers, cranes, horses and pandas) and some calligraphy.
Students will learn how to create the precise lines and bold brush
strokes that makes Chinese and Japanese painting unique. Students
will get an introduction to traditional techniques and learn how to
use materials such as inks, brushes, rice paper and painting
colors. Students will also get an introduction to Chinese and
Japanese calligraphic symbols and learn how to incorporate them
into their paintings. Students will not only have a chance to
practice but also develop their capability to understand and
appreciate Asian fine arts.

This course consists of two sessions: students will be trained
to use the various mediums, and to master basic skills during the
first session of the course. During the second session of the
course, students will work on their own projects. The instructor
will help students apply Asian art components to their own ideas,
personal styles and favorite subjects.

The format of the course consists of painting practice (Monday
through Thursday), art appreciation and class discussions (on
Friday). In addition to work with the instructor, the class may
have opportunity to meet Asian art historians and Chinese and
Japanese painters.

The language of instruction for this course is English.
However, students will have opportunity to learn and practice
Chinese and Japanese character written if they are interested.

This course presents a valuable opportunity for students in
all fields such as drawing and painting, graphic design, interior
design, fabric design, printmaking, ceramics, art history, art
education, Asian language and culture studies. This course is
designed to broaden students' art education, sharpen their skills
in ink and brush paintings, and improve their cross-cultural
understanding, hence, encouraging greater competitiveness in
national and international markets.
North Carolina art teachers who are renewing an existing
teaching certificate can apply through the Summer School as
