I'm going to have a 1986 Buick Regal painted this week. I don't want a
paint job that costs more than the value of the car so I've narrowed the
search for a paint shop to either Earl Scheib or Peach Auto Painting in
Raleigh. Both have various levels of service ranging from $159 to $299
and up after the "coupon" discount. I've spoken with both and checked
out their web sites. I would like some advice regarding quality and
honesty ( and any other aspect of dealing with either company) from
anyone who's dealt with either shop locally.

Please email me directly or post replies if you prefer. Don't forget to
edit my email address spam filter per below instructions if you email
me.

Many thanks,

Mike,
Two things: You get what you pay for so don't expect it to look
wonderful. It will probably look better than it does now but many
dings and scratches you never saw before will become apparent with new
paint. Also, you may want to remove any emblems, moldings, etc before
you take your car in. I don't know about Peach Auto but Earl's place
will sure as the world paint right over them!

I paint cars for a living. Quality materials to do an entire car in
base/clearcoat would run around $600 to $800 at wholesale. Average labor
for an entire car including some minor body work, around $2000. You get
what you pay for.

A close friend of mine had his car painted by Earl Scheib. It was a late 60's convertible. Nice car. Good shape, some scrates, nothing bad. He took it to Earl and they noticed it was a nice car, so they told him he'd better pay up $600 for them to do a decent job, otherwise it would be horrible. He did. I still looked horrible. Most people could do better with spray paint. Their work is pathetic. There was overspray everywhere. Not just your normal bodyshop overspray. It was EVERYWHERE. Also af
ter a year, the paint looked like crap, worse than it did before. I'd say save the $300, and just leave it be.

Between the two, Peach will do the better job. But remember, you will get
what you pay for.

I worked in the body shop industry for several years and will say that
Peach's reputation is better than Scheib's.

Well, if it's just a quickie paint job to get the car all one color, I guess it
really doesnt matter who does it. I would suggest the car owner do as much
surface prep and to remove or mask anything that should not get painted.

We surveyed a number of cheap shops and ended up at Maaco. Couldn't beat
the work for the money, but it was certainly not a primo paint job (nor
was it supposed to be.)

I cant agree to that, I used to have an 1988 Crown Vic that I had painted at
Maaco. Within 1 month after they did the job the paint started to show rust
spots through the paint. This is not including the terrible job they did in
the first place (however I admit, I did get what I paid for.)

On a related note, I have a 91 Ford Ranger that was recently in a
rear-ender.. Almost the entire truck got repainted except the doors and
roof. Can anyone recommend a GOOD paint shop, not necessarily one that is
cheap, that will paint just those parts?

You can't agree that I got a satisfactory paint job? Interesting.

The best body shop in the Triangle (in my not-so-respected opinion) is
True2Form (formerly Performance Auto Body) in Holly Springs. They're
expensive, but they're excellent. YMMV

Be sure to get a quote from Bob at Quality First Auto Body in Wake Forest.
He has a small shop tucked away in a building behind the Western Auto.

He does first rate work. Considering what I've read here in response to my
question, I may get him to paint only the two or three badly rusted panels of
my old 86 Buick instead of a cheap whole car job.
