It's rare that I dine in Durham, but we'll be doing it
tomorrow evening, early. I'd welcome suggestions for
a place--reasonably priced, casual, and near Duke.
Anybody? TIA.

Places I can think of off the top of my head that I have eaten at and
can recommend.

Inexpensive:
Cosmic Cantina, Fish Mongers (depends on the night), El Rodeo (good,
but don't say green card), Cinelli's, Elmo's, Banh's (Vietnamese and
Chinese)

Moderately priced all within a short distance of Duke's east campus:
Tosca, George's Garage, Vin Rouge, Parizade, Niko's, Pops

The only one I can think of near the west campus is expensive:
Washington Duke Inn

Veggi friendly:
Bakos, Whole Foods, Anothertyme

More expensive close to Duke's east campus:
Nanas, Magnolia Grill, Four Square,

I'm sure you'll get a flood of responses -- Durham has so many great
restaurants.

IMHO, the best non-splurgy restaurant in Durham is Pop's, in Brightleaf
Square. Great Italian-inspired bistro food, great service, nice
ambiance. Try the chicken cooked under a brick, or any of their
risottos.

My other favorites close to Duke are :
Grasshopper -- Pan-Asian cuisine, eat outside, reasonable prices,
great service
Across from Elmo's, more or less, on the little triangle where
Markham crosses 9th St to become Hillsboro road
Try dumplings, spring rolls, or the Vietnamese beef sandwiches
(menu changes often)

Blue Corn -- Pan-latino cuisine, great service, reasonable prices
Middle of 9th St between Hillsboro & Main
Try the Ropa Vieja (Mexican pot roast) or the Papas Rellenos
(stuffed potatoes) or any of the taco/enchilada type dishes. Fish is
good here, too.

Both of these are friendly and casual; Blue Corn can be a little noisy.

For even more casual (order at the counter) try Mad Hatter -- good
wraps, salads, etc.Near Whole Foods at the corner of Iredell & Main.

For that matter, the hot food counter at WF isn't bad for fast and
cheap.

Really good food, good beer, sketchy yet very casual atmosphere:
Federal on Main Street.

In contrast, I can't stand Pop's. The last time I ate there, the
pasta *looked* good -- I could cleary see tomatoes, garlic, onions,
etc. But it was so bland as to make me wonder how, exactly, they
cooked all the taste out of the ingredients. As that visit was our
"giving them one last chance" visit, we haven't been back.

Seconded. Blue Corn is quite good.

To go (just a little bit) further afield, you could check out Tonali
(which has gotten a lot of attention here recently, and for good reason).
It's on Shannon Rd., by South Square.

Not that it's food related, but I think they have a DJ playing there pretty often: all vinyl, classic 60's and 70's funk & jazz. I haven't been to hear that program yet, but it sounds like something you can't find much of anymore. I've gone to quite a few of the same guy's Masala Beat Club events (Bollywood and east asian rhythms) and he really gets the crowd up and dancing. Great stuff, google for Federal Soul if interested in that side of the place.

Just one more to add to the numerous good suggestions: Verde. In the
tall bank building on Main west of 9th Street, next to Parizade. Light
European cuisine in a casual atmosphere. If you're hardy, you can eat
outside.

Many thanks to all the responders! Taverna Nikos and
Parizade were on the list of places we've enjoyed in
the past, but it seems a shame not to try a new place
when we have the chance. You've given us a LOT of
possibilities--thanks!

I love Another Thyme on Duke Street... It is great for lunch or
dinner... Another good choice is George's Garage, which has a great
sushi menu... The tempura shrimp and crab are fantastic! They
specialize in seafood, but everything on the menu is delicious!

I also love the Parizade, but the prices are a little higher...

Anotherthyme <www.anotherthyme.com> has not been open for lunch for
over ten years.

There are a ton of great restaurants in Durham. If you would like a
good local list go to http://TheGourmetDiner.com and click on durham
and you will find a listing of only locally owned full service
restaurants.
