I carry extra red blinkie lights in my glove box and politely offer
them to riders without lights at night or early morning. I should get
some of the yellow, reflective tape or bands & offer also. But most
of the riders I see early in the morning, on my way to yoga, have
extremely bright head lights and red blinkie lights, easy to see and,
as a driver, I am thankful. Moni

I am almost paranoid about it now, and I creep along the road sometimes making sure I don't even hit a lightning bug (especially if he or she is lit up).

For example, for the 3 months (October through December) of last year when I swam 4 nights a week at the GAC, every time I rode up Westridge and turned left onto Hobbs and then onto Holden Road, I would pass such a nearly-invisible cyclist. I never, ever saw one brightly dressed with a reflective jersey (like my husband's SeeMeWear jersey) with blinkie lights. And, even though Westridge has bike lanes, I passed cyclists who were riding over in the vehicle lane, and ones who passed through red lights without stopping, and ones who wove in and out of traffic. I was shocked. At the risk of being redundant, this was NOT a rare sight!

I apologize for offending anyone or ruffling anyone's feathers, as I know our feelings are very tender when we think of someone who has lost his/her life, but each of us could be on either side of such a tragedy, and I am trying hard not to judge. That is not my place.

I'm thinking about doing that even if I manage to look dorkier than I do already. I will never look like someone riding in Tour de France, but perhaps I will be more visible!

Drivers owe us respect but we need to remember that we are harder to see...especially that time of day. We need to be realistic...regardless if fault we'll be hurt worse. Ever since I almost hit that person, considering myself very vigilant, I am very very defensive. I probably missed the person by a foot! I could not have lived with myself and seriously just got lucky...no cell phone..no speeding......just very bad lighting and other cars. I'm sorry if I offend anybody but I don't want one of us to hit someone to realize what that person is probably feeling. I know it is nothing compared to the family and friends, but the driver isn't getting off free no matter what. Just realize cycling at that time puts at a higher risk...and we're already high risk!
