The Piedmont Fat Tire Society is dedicated to the education, promotion, and enrichment of sustainable mountain biking trails and the communities they serve.

Year Of The Trail - Welcome 2023

On December 6, 2022 The Great Trails State Coalition announced that 2023 will be the North Carolina Year of the Trail. NC Year of the Trail celebrates North Carolina’s vast network of trails and greenways. It is the largest statewide celebration of trails and outdoor recreation in North Carolina history. Piedmont Fat Tire is excited to be a part of this celebration and looks forward to finding ways in 2023 to support the goals of NC Year of the Trail. We are fortunate to have The Greensboro Mountain Bike Experience which gives people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds the chance to try riding mtb’s on our trails. PFTS is committed to growing our membership to give us a larger voice when we demonstrate the importance of trails to elected officials. We will continue to brainstorm events that advance diversity and inclusion on our trails, and of course, PFTS will continue to promote our mission to encourage safe and responsible use of the trails.

PFTS board of directors will hold our annual planning session on January 21, to set goals for the year, vote on the calendar, and create a plan to make sure that each month we find ways to celebrate NC Year of the Trail.

Bike Shop Spotlight

Bespoke Cyclery began when Ed Reynolds III and Trevor Hughes, together with their families, decided to offer something special and different to the local cycling community. They created a unique space and set of services that cyclists of all ages, abilities, and interests would appreciate. Operations began in 2020 as a mobile concierge bicycle service and repair business, serving Winston-Salem, Lewisville, Clemmons, Kernersville, and the surrounding areas. Now housed in a lovingly refurbished space in the Lewisville Roller Mill, Bespoke carries a full line of bikes, equipment, accessories, and apparel to fit a wide range of use, size, and budget - but always of the highest quality. Brands carried include Factor, Giant, Liv, Willier, Serotta, Pearl Izumi, Shimano….and more.
Starting as the only full-service mobile bike shop in the area allowed Bespoke Cyclery to quickly and safely build a following during a time when others were limited by the challenges of the pandemic. Using 20+ years of experience and relationships in the bicycle industry, Ed was able to procure parts and equipment quickly to service all varieties of bicycle in hours or days, when others had wait times of weeks or longer. The convenient mobile pick-up and delivery service is still on offer today, even after the welcoming space in the Lewisville Mill has opened with comfortable bar stools so guests can relax during a consultation or watch their bike being serviced.
Inclusivity is central to the Bespoke Cyclery mission. To Ed and Trevor, this means meeting cyclists where they are. Trevor’s 10+ years of racing and certification as a USA Triathlon and TriDot coach qualify him to advise cyclists and triathletes at any level. Ed’s extensive resume of formal training and professional certifications ensure the highest level of service for all bikes and cyclists, from training wheels to racing wheels. Form follows function with custom-built Wheels by Ed, and expert bike fits and training plans help beginners and avid athletes achieve their goals in safety and comfort.

TIRE PRESSURE TIP by Josh Snyder
Setting mtb tire psi? Use body weight (in pounds) divided by 7, add 2 psi for the rear, and subtract 1 psi for the front. Example: 140 lb rider would run 22 psi rear, 19 psi front. Works great on our local terrain. Of course you can adjust depending on the trail if you feel it's necessary.

FROZEN TRAIL RIDING TIPS by Lauren Elledge
• Riding frozen trails is tricky because you want to avoid damaging the trails as the temperature rises during the day. Riding below 32°F is best.
• Frozen trails have good traction and are hard-packed and grippy!
• Keep an eye on shady spots that are likely to have more icy spots and sunny spots that may be thawing faster and can be slick.
• Don’t fight or overcorrect if you start to slide on hidden ice, gently steer your bike in the direction of your skid and don’t pull the brakes!
• Look for foliage, leaves, higher ground to glide over (less icy than lower/moist ground) but try to avoid riding around the trail as that can widen the trail and cause issues.
• I like to grit my teeth, enjoy the thrill, and pray that if I wreck…it’s not too bad!
• I generally keep my tire pressure around my usual pressures, front tire a little less than the rear. You can play around with lowering both tires about 1-2psi from your usual pressures.
• If the temperature starts warming up, then the moisture in the soil will get sloppy and the trails will start to damage. Help leave the dirt on the trail and head to the greenway!

PRE-RIDE EATING TIPS by Emily Werner
The best way to fuel before a ride or race is to consume a meal containing predominantly carbohydrates with a little fat and protein. A few examples are oatmeal with nuts or seeds, eggs and toast, or pancakes and maple syrup with a little bit of peanut butter.

Thank you!  PFTS is committed to building community by promoting and supporting all the wonderful people who support both the club and fellow cyclists. Hopefully you will send some more tips!  I actually did get feedback from a subscriber that they never knew there was a formula for tire pressure!   Keep the tips coming!!
