To set the record straight, although I say the phrase, “Ride hard when it’s easy, and easy when it’s hard,” I stole this expression from Scott Romine.

If you are new to cycling, it simply means that if you want to increase your average pace,  ride hard (push yourself) on the flats and down the hills, and back it off, and don’t burn yourself out on the uphills.

This also helps groups stay together. Stronger riders can pull weaker riders on the flats and down hills as long as they don’t drop them or burn them out on the uphills. Stopping to wait for weaker riders and then restarting from a stand still at the top of hill or a turn will always decrease the group’s average miles per hour.

If the group plans to stay together for the entire ride and they want the fastest pace possible, the entire group should climb at a pace everyone can keep, and never stop unless traffic laws or safety dictates.
