Hope this finds you all doing well! 

I want to update you on the "Once In a Lifetime" musical opportunity for the TRIAD area. Attached please find the flyer about three accomplished musicians from India who are currently touring USA. Some of you, who are members of ICMDS (Raleigh) or Charlotte associations may already know of their upcoming performances on May 29 and May 31.  Additional info at the end of this mail ..

Of special mention is "Jalatarang" performance by Pt. Milind Tulankar ... which is rare even in India.  I had heard his grandfather play when I was very young ... and now him! 


We have a rare opportunity to host their performance in Greensboro on May 28 (so we don't have to travel far), and have a chance to experience this gem of percussion ensemble up-close. We will get a discount on concert fees as we do not have to cover the travel expenses by them being in the NC area already, and I will do the pick up and drop-off to Charlotte.

I can organize this NON-PROFIT concert if we can have 50 - 80 people who are interested in attending the performance, at the contribution of up to $25-$30 each (more the people, less the fees).  Students could pay $10-$15, if possible.  This will cover a large portion of the bare minimum fees for the artists.  Of course, any one who could arrange larger sponsorships would be even better. 

 

It is important that we have a sizable audience for such a concert, as it also encourages the artists.  Thanks to Promod, I have already reserved the wonderful UNCG College of Music Concert Hall for this on the May 28.  I know that many of you are affiliated with other Indian/ American Cultural Organizations, and please pass on this information for wider distribution.

 

As the time is short to finalize the plans and arrangements, PLEASE let me know at your earliest (but no later than Tuesday) if you are interested in attending the concert and if so how much you would be willing to contribute so I can get an idea of the collection.  We can determine the final amount based on the responses received.

About the Artists - Milind Tulankar:
Born and brought up in a family with musical background,
Milindji started learning music from a very tender age. His grandfather Late Pandit Shankar V Kanhere (Satara) who was a famous Jaltarang player influenced Milind in taking up this unusual dying instrument the JALTARANG. He also received guidance from Pt. Nayan Ghosh , SITAR maestro Ustad Shahid Parwez & Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar.
Milind is one of the topmost Jaltarang players of India. Baba Harwallabh Sangeet Sammelan  at Jalandhar, Abhisheki Mahotsav at Goa are some of the concerts where he has performed. This rare instrument has kept him busy in concerts  in India as well as abroad including countries such as Malaysia, Shrilanka, Singapore, New Zealand Austria, Switzerland, Germany, USA , Canada, Dubai, and Aabudhabi. He is been doing some interesting projects with Ustad Taufiq Qureshi. A BBC production film 'West is west' has background scores played on Jalatarang by him.
Milind Tulankar is indeed a name, synonym for the untiring efforts, devotion, and endless passion in pursuit of promoting Jaltarang

First prize for music direction in National Youth Festival.
Best Organ Player for Sangeet Sharada at Delhi.

Pandit Ramdas Palsule
is a very familiar name to the worshippers of Hindustani music as an intellectual Tabla Player who has carved a niche for himself at a very young age. Having achieved Bachelor's degree in engineering, Ramdas has been recognized as one of the most senior disciples of World Famous Tabla Maestro Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar.
Being an accomplished soloist as well as a versatile accompanist, he has performed widely in all the eminent music festivals of India.  Outside India, he has performed practically all over the world including countries like U.S.A., Canada, U.K., Germany, Australia, Africa and the Gulf Countries.

His Tabla accompaniment ranges from distinguished vocalists to prominent instrumentalists and also to renowned Kathak dancers of the country. He has accompanied with almost all the top notch musicians & dancers of today.
Besides performances, Ramdas imparts training to the younger generation of students of Tabla. He is also appointed as a Guru in the Center for Performing Arts of the University of Pune.
 
 
 
Ustad Taufiq Qureshi 
an ace percussionist of India, is also an acclaimed composer. Being the son and disciple of the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Allarakha; Taufiq’s performances showcase the traditional flavour and intricacies of Indian rhythm, interwoven with his phenomenal command and sparkle of contemporary world percussions.

Taufiq’s trademark style incorporates body and vocal percussions to create unique rhythmic motifs spanning across cultures. His sense of tone and his command over a wide variety of percussion instruments and styles is commendable.
Taufiq’s albums have been released world over and he has performed at prestigious music festivals all over the globe. Taufiq has been featured as a performing artiste on the 2009- Grammy award winning album ‘Global Drum Project’. Taufiq’s album ‘Rhydhun’ amongst others is said to have set new standards for world music in India.

Taufiq Qureshi is the worthy torchbearer of a rich legacy of percussion, being the son and disciple of the legendary Ustad Allarakha and brother of the maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain. Taufiq has been greatly influenced by his illustrious brother, Ustad Zakir Hussain and is privileged to receive guidance from Ghatam Vidhwan, Pandit Vikku Vinayakram. 

After a long and arduous journey of over twenty years, Taufiq continues to evolve as a percussionist in the ever- inspiring world of live-audience performances.

By virtue of his amazing versatility as a percussionist and as a composer of sorts he has carved himself a special niche in the field of world music and is fondly referred to as: Prince of Percussion
