On the Trevanian.com website, it states that the Summer of Katya will
soon be a major motion picture (it's on the left-hand side of the
page): http://www.trevanian.com/books/katya.htm
Any more info with regard to its development?

I have numerous pictures taken during visits to the Katya/Bearnaise
villages as well as Haute Soule/Zuberoa (following Hannah Stern's
route) and hope to post them at some point.

I still recall emailing Jerry Pournelle years ago informing him of
Trevanian's identity and recently of his passing. Jerry mentioned that
Rod Whitaker was terrific in everything save for poker.

Thanks for putting up this google group, Dennis. Your research is
astounding.

Have you visited Pays-Basque as well?

Cheers!

JJ/Jon

JJ/Jon,

Are you the JJ who has posted elsewhere over the years in various
forums Re: Trevanian?

Good catch on the Trevanian web site, I don't know how many times I
looked for the blurb on Katya as a movie, must have had blinders on.

You should post your pictures up or something, I know in various places
many people have identified various places in trevanian's books by
their "real" namess, it would be nice if somebody collected them
together, especially the places in the Basque lands.

-----------------------------------------
Did Jerry Pournelle Email you?

If he did could you post up his reply here SVP.

I have seen the two blurbs re: Whitaker on his website (I think I
started a thread on this somewhere), I had meant to get around to
Emailing him at some point.

--------------------------------------------------

I also understand that Whitaker and Poul Anderson (the SF writer) were
friends as well.

----------------------------------------

As far as this Google Group I know Brain (Chiwito) suggested getting on
Usenet.

I have no idea how to do that however I would be receptive.

I have been somewhat dissappointed at the level of traffic here as I
had hoped to create a top notch Trevanian resource and pool people's
knowledge on the subject / man.

I am considering shutting this one down and moving the contents of this
group over to a Yahoo group.

-------------------------------------

I have never visited the Pays Basque, the furthest north I ever got was
Madrid, I hope to some day but I live in the US and it is very hard for
me to match up time with mtive with money.

--------------------------------------------------

The reason I have done research on Trevanian / Whitaker over the years
is because it is a challange research-wise and I have enjoyed his books
over the years.

With the Internet and access to various databases it really has become
a matter of the occasional searches and the preservation of various
bits. Sometimes in idle hours I pursue this topic among my other
interests.

I think Rod Whitaker is a facinating man and that his life would make a
very interesting and worthy biography. I had considered trying to do
one myself though I am not sure that i ever can or will.

I was quite certain however that while he was alive Whitaker would have
probably never sanctioned or authorized a biography much less
cooperated with one being done.

I have been adding some of my gathered bits to the Wikipedia biography
in the hopes of teasing further details out.

On another note the Library of Congress lists three scripts /
screenplays / adaptations for Summer of Katya.

The first is copyrighted to Whitaker's son created in 1985 and the next
two were copyrighted in 1999 and 2000 respectively (on another note the
LOC also indicates that a script for Shibumi was copyrighted by
Whitaker's son and oldest daughter in 1985 as well):

You can search for yourself.

---------------------------------------------------------
Here is a curious reference that pertains to a theater company and the
Summer of katya that I stumbled across when i saw your post on the
Katya movie.:

http://www.algonquinproductions.org/lol2005.html

Tony Sportiello (Playwright)
Has written more than twenty-five plays, including "Second Chance",
..."The Summer of Katya", ...Two of his plays ("National Pastime" and
"Contract Time") are in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. His one
act play "Tickets, Please!" was published by
Sam French. He has been Artistic Director of three separate theater
companies, including Algonquin Theater Productions, which is focused on
moving shows on to the professional level.

I suspect it may be interesteting to follow up on this and see if
permissionss were sought etc.

Jon,

Thanks for the Email and the tidbits, I use the Nikuradse Email
basically to facilitate various web doings that require an Email (in
other words a front).

I will get around to writing a reply but I am a bit busy at the present
time.
