RogerGamble from BNI Seward County in Nebraska joins Dr. Misner to talk about creating power teams that fit your region. Seward County is very rural and the chapter had many members whose businesses related to farming, so the chapter created an agricultural (AG) power team in order to increase referrals to farmer clients.

I am Priscilla Rice, coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. I am joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan. How are you today?


Ivan:

I am doing great, Priscilla. I have a guest with me today. His name is Roger Gamble. Roger is a financial planner, a financial advisor and he is a founding member of BNI the Heartland Seward County chapter, which is a very rural agricultural chapter in the organization.


Roger sent me something that I just found so interesting. I asked him to write it up and put it in SuccessNet and I wanted to do a podcast on this because it was such a creative idea to find an unusual way to bring in visitors into the chapter, to really think outside the box and bring in visitors into the chapter. So what the Seward County Nebraska chapter did was create an agricultural power team, an ag power team.


Roger:

Well absolutely, Dr. Misner. What we did was we are in, as you described, a rural area in Seward County Nebraska, with a population of about 20,000. Seward itself seats 7500. When we came together and put the chapter together in November 2012, when it was chartered, we had a lot of members that had a lot of business or focused their business on farmers.


We have farmers out there in rural Nebraska that grow corn and soy beans 25 miles west of Lincoln. So I continued to read material about BNI, listen to podcasts, read books, CDs etc. I started learning about power teams, so we got together an agricultural group that concentrates their business or had a lot of business with farmers, decided to put that power team together, so that maybe we could increase our referrals to each other with our farmer clients and other farmers that we know. So that is basically how that power team was formed, sir.


What I love about this concept is taking it and applying it to the community that you are in so if you are in a region- if you are listening to this podcast and you are not in a rural region, think about how you can apply it to your region. Maybe it is a construction power team or a lot of construction business in the area or health services in the area. Or maybe manufacturing in the area.


Roger:

Well, I mean, first of all, a power team should be meeting on a regular basis, which we do. So as we were continuing to meet, we talked about ways to pass referrals, to get farmers to do business with each other. We kind of looked at the idea and said we each do our ten minute presentation. We had coming up ag month, which is March here; agriculture is recognized in the month of March.


We decided to take one of those presentations during the month of March and have not only that ag power team but the rest of the members of our chapter invite a farmer. So we came in, we did that, we put the day together, we had one of our ag power team members, Trenton Boltmore from Austin Company Bolt Management, talk about a topic very interesting to farmers, agricultural land sales, because that affects all of them.


Ivan:

Roger, please call me Ivan. I am pretty informal here. I love this concept. As a rule, visitors are somebody who is a prospective member. That is generally what a visitor is. But this is a conscious decision, which I support. I love the idea. A conscious decision to bring in some visitors who are potentially consumers.


Roger:

Yes. The guy that I brought, I will call him Farmer Jerry. When he finished the meeting, he went back and talked to the implement dealer at the Nebraska Implement Company and talked to our member there and participated. They were having a sale. And then he looked at a pickup that they just literally bought, went down the road and finished the deal on a new pickup that he bought. So it is just amazing what transpired as a result of that meeting.


Roger:

For one, our ag focus team would like to get more farmers in. We would like to concentrate maybe for a one month period of time, a period during late November or December when farmers are making decisions- to have them come in and to have them hear presentations from one of our ag power team members.


The other thing is that our group is looking at doing different power teams, such as a wedding power team to bring those folks together and get young people or parents that need services to be able to plan and do weddings. There are all kinds of things.


You look at commonalities of people in chapters and what people bring to the table because, Ivan, we are really bringing the concept together of bringing the whole package, not just piece by piece, to consumers through BNI.


It is a great way to bring in business if it is done in a strategic way, not haphazardly. Not on a weekly basis, but with a strategic plan. I think it is a great concept, Roger. Kudos to your chapter for thinking outside the box. I was very impressed.


Roger:

No, I just hope that the members out there think of some ways that they can do it. I think there are a lot of ways you can do it. Just start thinking a little bit differently and a lot of ideas will happen. That is basically what is starting to happen in our chapter with some of the other members as well.

Slow pacing while we get to know new characters is not entirely a bad thing, but this is getting perhaps a little bit too slow. On the other hand, considering The Lord of the Rings spends several chapters following the hobbits walking across the Shire, walking through some woods, and chilling out with Tom Bombadil, before they eventually meet Aragorn and the story really gets going, maybe we should just consider this an homage to Tolkien. Hopefully, now that all the major stories, players, and geographical locations have been introduced, the series will pick up the pace a bit in episode 4, and we can start to get more of a sense of where all of this is going.


The Rings of Power E8 had to finish the season in a satisfying way. The expectations placed on the Lord of the Rings spin off may have weighed it down like the One Ring around the neck of a hobbit, but the show finally answered some of the many questions that have been asked over the eight episodes and left fans eager for more.


The Harfoots show that halfling strength and bravery we all love when defending their tall and increasingly verbose friend, acting as the heart of the show in a way that would make Tolkien proud. Bravery in the face of seemingly unsurmountable odds is a core element of Lord of the Rings and it is clearly on display in The Rings of Power E8. Galadriel and Elrond grow closer as the future Lady of Lothlorien grows suspicious of her ally Halbrand (a highlight in this episode) and a final shot of Mordor will leave fans eager for the start of season two. The episode focuses on trust. The trust between Galadriel and Elrond as she watches with suspicion as Halbrand grows closer to Celebrimbor. There is also the trust between Nori and The Stranger, as she is adamant that he is a good man, even when he is not so sure himself. Such themes lead to a stronger episode and one that feels very Tolkien and will please most fans of Lord of the Rings.
