Kerry Malone paced around the very large office-space that had been assigned to him aboard the Triton. His mind was racing with the recent information that had come his way. There was no manual on how to deal with this situation, although given the frequency with which Starfleet faced this kind of situation, you would’ve thought some egg-head would’ve sat down and written a guide. Standing off to one side of the room, surrounding his desk, were a group of advisors, who were there to help Malone with his decisions.
The problem facing Malone at this particular moment was how to deal with the Kingston situation. As yet, they’d been completely unable to raise the Kingston, nor even locate the damn ship using the sophisticated sensor-network deployed in Federation controlled Gamma Quadrant. However, there were large areas of space that were blind to them, and they had to assume she was hiding out somewhere in the blind spots. All they had was her last reported position when she’d destroyed the Quigon.
“We should sent the Ticonderoga out after the Kingston.” Commander Thomas Beckett said.
“No No No.” Malone said. “The last thing I want to do is deploy a goddamn battleship to locate a Nebula class starship. For starters, we’re holding the Tico in reserve in case something else flares up. A Magellen is a good ship to hold in reserve to fight fires.”
“We need a ship of sizable force to take on the Kingston.” Beckett countered. “She’s a Battlecruiser variant, for peats sake. She can take on most of anything we have floating around, and hold her own against a Galaxy class.”
“Why’re you advocating shooting at her?” Captain Aliecia Cruz` asked. “We’ve got no idea who is on board her. She could have Starfleet personnel on board still, or survivors of the Quigon. We can’t go in shooting, before we know what we’re dealing with.”
“Are you mad?” Beckett asked. “She’s clearly displayed her intentions, and we have the sensor logs of the Quigon to support that.”
“Logs that could’ve been faked.” Cruz` replied. “We only discovered the buoy recently, and it could’ve been tampered with.”
“Well, you can’t fake the distress call that clearly says the Kingston opened fire first, and was intent on destroying the Quigon. We’ve also found the wreckage of the Quigon. What more do you want?” Beckett demanded, angrily.
“Enough, both of you.” Malone said, turning to face them. “This situation requires a delicate hand. We’ve already got the local powers terrified of Federation starships, for fear they’ll go rogue, which is exactly what someone wants. We need to deal with this quickly, and quietly, without a major firefight, if we can avoid it.”
“What’re you advocating, sir?” Beckett asked.
“We send a ship of comparable size and strength to go out and find her, and deal with her.” Malone said, and walked over to the starmap on the wall, and pointed to a region of space nearby. “We need a captain with a level head, and good combat experience, in case this goes south. What have we got that isn’t tied up?”
Cruz` consulted her PADD. “There’s the USS Amazon, Sabre class.” She said. “Just come out from repairs. Due to fly convoy duty.”
“Sabre’s too small.” Beckett said. “It’ll be turned to stardust with one salvo.”
“He has a point, Captain.” Malone said. “What else you got?”
“Not much at all, we’re really pared to the bone in the Gamma Quadrant.” Cruz` said.
“What have we got spare in the Alpha Quadrant?” Malone asked.
“Even less, but there is the USS Atlantia. She’s just wrapping up her investigation into the Genesis device, and is supposed to go for resupply and rest at Starbase 86.” Cruz` said.
“Captain Willams’s command?” Beckett asked.
Cruz` nodded. “She’s an Atlantia class cruiser. Slightly smaller than a Nebula, but she’s far more advanced, and more agile. Still an experimental concept class.”
“Cooper’s got a level head, if I recall.” Beckett said. “Sharpe says he’s a good man, and its hard to impress that old git.”
Kerry frowned at that, but looked at Cruz`. “Cut orders to Captain Willams. Have him set course for sector six eight four mark eight in the Gamma Quadrant, as soon as he’s done tidying up the Genesis situation. Inform him he’s released to go at maximum warp. Send him all the intelligence we have on this situation, and inform him that it’s a priority one mission. If he needs resupply, tell him to drop by Starbase Zetari en-route.”
Cruz` nodded. “Orders will be transmitted immediately.”
“Lets hope the Atlantia can do it.” Malone said.
