I did look at the Gnarly Barley site and their homebrew competition is not a standard competition. I've pasted below what I copied directly from their site.

- Shawn Crawford

This year’s competition will be different than previous years.
We are partnering with
Grimm Brothers Brewhouse to give one lucky homebrewer the chance to “Brew For a Day” with Grimm Brothers Brewhouse.

Beer types are limited to the following categories:
Pilsner - Vienna - Oktoberfest - Munich - Schwartz - Bock - Kolsch - Alt - Weizen - Roggen - Berliner Weisse – Rauch

Only the first 50 people to register will be entered in the competition and will be required to drop off 1 bottle per entry along with a $10 check to Grimm Brothers Brewhouse during July 15-19, between 1-6pm. (Please include your event ticket that will print after registration is confirmed).

Prizes are:

1st Place
"Brew For A Day" with Grimm Brothers Brewhouse of Loveland and 2 VIP tickets for Gnarly Barley 2014.

2nd Place
Grimm Brothers gear and 2 General Admission tickets to Gnarly Barley 2014.

3rd Place

Grimm Brothers prize pack and 2 General Admission tickets to Gnarly Barley 2014.

all,
Due to a family illness Michael Hinton has had to cancel the Summer solstice party at his house next Saturday.
We all wish Michael and his loved ones a speedy recovery.

Just a heads up about the Gnarly Barley Brewfest competition...

The reason theirs is no longer a standard AHA/BJCP competition is that last year they refused to reimburse the Weiz Guys for their expenses in coordinating and hosting the competition.  I'm not sure how much their expenses were, but I know they lost some money and they are no longer partnering with Gnarly Barley.  So they must have decided to run their own "competition" separate from any homebrew club or BJCP/AHA.

Feel free to enter if you wish, but it seems like a pretty underhanded move on their part, so I personally will be boycotting the competition.

Just thought everyone should know why the competition is so different from years past.

Likewise this is why Crabtree Brewing has also been boycotting the Gnarly Barley now for two years.  The organizers of the event pay each brewery for the beer but in turn charge them a rental fee to tap said beer.  The craft beer industry supports donations of our beer that embraces and supports non-profit events, but this event is after private profit only.

Support events that support our community and better society through the use of beer – not for commercial profit!

Jeff Crabtree.

Thanks so much for chiming in Jeff.  It's sad to see how many of these types of events are popping up now.  There are a lot of people looking to profit from the growing popularity of craft beer, and unfortunately many attendees of these events don't realize where their money is going.

Many of these events do contribute part of their proceeds to a local non-profit, but sadly I don't believe that's the case with Gnarly Barley.  I don't believe they support any charitable organizations or non-profits, so all of the proceeds go directly to the event organizers.

Maybe one day we can organize a beer festival here in Greeley that directly benefits local charities and non-profits.  Plus we have Oktoberfest in September that directly benefits the Greeley DDA.  Thanks again for the info Jeff.

Cheers,
Neil
