Tallaght Community Council Holds it's AGM - Calls for Interested Groups to Join & Outlines Plans for 2012.

Tallaght Community Council (TCC), one of the oldest voluntary community groups in Tallaght held their annual AGM in the library function room in The Abberley Hotel on Tuesday, May 17th 2011. It was attended by the current committee members, representatives from Seskin View, Mountain View, Citywest, Aylesbury, Springfield, Virginia Heights, Firhouse and Bancroft. Minister Hayes and Councillor John Hannon were the only public representatives to attend the public meeting, a point that Jim said was bitterly disappointing, particularly at a time when Tallaght has growing unemployment and other challenges which require a strongly supported community foundation to tackle. He urged public representatives to contact him to discuss how a stronger partnership can be established. Former TD and TCC secretary, Charlie O'Connor and former Councillor Mick Murphy also attended the meeting and made contributions during the meeting.

The current chairman, Jim Lawlor from Seskin View in Old Bawn, gave his address which detailed the areas of activity TCC had been involved in down through the years. These included the environment, infrastructure, promoting sensible planning and development, bringing hospital services to Tallaght and running the Tallaght Person of the Year Awards to honour the unsung heros of our communities. TCC has an impressive history. He outlined the committee plans to review and modernise the structure and objective of TCC in the Tallaght of the 21st century. TCC want to be an accessible and relevant apolitical, voluntary group, working for the good of the thousands of people living and working here in Tallaght. 2010 had been a challenging one for every family and business in Tallaght and 2011 is proving to be the same. It is vital that people pull together to preserve the business and amenities we have in Tallaght and to push for more investment and amenities which will enhance Tallaght as a place to live and work and play in. He urged the newer areas in Tallaght from Ballycullen to The Belfry to Marlfield to contact TCC if they wished to join forces and work together to promote community issues - there is strength in numbers.

TCC sought proposals for independent members to join the committee - these are interested people who are not members of local residents associations or groups. TCC were delighted to welcome two new independent members onto the committee, Mrs Liz Kennedy and Mr Jim Lawlor. The full committee will be elected at a meeting to be held within the next two weeks in the TCC office in Bolbrook. All interested sports, business, community or residents groups are invited to nominate up to 2 delegates on the TCC to ensure all parts of Tallaght is represented on the committee. The commitment of being a member is around 10 hours a year, with a return of representing your community's views and helping to ensure Tallaght remains an attractive and safe place to live, go to school, work, run a business or raise a family.

TCC have outlined their desire to focus on 3 - 4 proactive priority items in the coming year, including developing a tourism plan for Tallaght and developing Tallaght as an Education city. Both of these activities will help preserve the existing jobs in the industry and possibly creating more employment opportunities in the area. Minister Hayes offered to support this proposal through his ministerial office, which includes the OPW. Minister Hayes also announced that through his ministry he would be bringing the impressive annual exhibition of national art to Tallaght this year. Councillor Hannon reminded the TCC meeting that the new SDCC Litter Management Plan is out for public consultation and the closing date for submissions is June 9th.

Any interested groups can contact TCC by email at tallagh...@gmail.com, or by phone on 014513106. A new TCC Facebook page is to be launched in the coming weeks.

All interested individuals or groups are always welcome.
