Walkable Neighborhoods Across The US

Bloomberg CityLab recently featured an innovative interactive map called "Close," created by geographer Nat Henry. This map visualizes the walkability and accessibility of neighborhoods across the United States. Originally developed for Seattle in 2023, the map has now been expanded nationwide, allowing users to explore how easily they can reach various destinations like grocery stores, parks, schools, and transit stops from any location in the country. This map offers a unique perspective on urban connectivity, blending technology, geography, and urban planning to provide insights into the livability of American neighborhoods.

Visualize Parking Maps Across The US

The Parking Reform Network offers an interactive Open Parking Map App that visualizes surface parking areas worldwide using crowdsourced OpenStreetMap data. Users can search for specific cities and view mapped parking spaces, though the data may not be comprehensive for all locations. The tool aims to illustrate how much land cities dedicate to parking, supporting the network's mission of parking reform. The app serves as an educational resource for urban planners, policymakers, and the public interested in land use and sustainable urban development.

Making Your Own Satellite Maps Is Easier Now

Ever wondered how satellite images are transformed into detailed maps? Enter segment-geospatial, a Python package that's revolutionizing this tedious process. This innovative tool harnesses artificial intelligence to automatically identify and outline features in satellite imagery and geospatial data. By adapting the Segment Anything Model (SAM) for geographical use, it simplifies complex image segmentation tasks, making them accessible to researchers, urban planners, and environmental scientists. With capabilities ranging from automatic detection to text-prompted feature extraction, and seamless integration with popular GIS software, segment-geospatial is transforming how we analyze our planet's surface.
