o This closing workshop has been popular in the past as a way to discuss, share, and summarize the sessions and conversations people heard around sustainability during the AM.

o Action: Please let Dan Hardy (dha...@citiesthatwork.com) know if you can help facilitate a small group discussion or give a brief summary presentation to the full group.

Finally, probably buried the lead, but TRB completed their realignment <http://onlinepubs.trb.org/onlinepubs/dva/strategicalignment/TRBDispositionCurrentCommittees.pdf> and this will be the last AM under the current structure. There are lots of reasons for the realignment that you can read online, but one outcome is to eliminate ADD40. The change reflects the success of ADD40 as sustainability topics are now ingrained into committees throughout TRB, which is largely because of work done by the members and friends of ADD40 - thank you all for that. TRB still recognizes a need to integrate sustainability into policy and research, so TRB is grouping a series of committees into a sustainability section and group. Bill Anderson will attend the Tuesday afternoon committee meeting to describe the realignment in greater detail and answer questions.

Looking forward to seeing many of you next week. Please let me know if you have any questions about/before the AM.

Happy Holidays!

Dear TRB Technical Activities Committee, Section, Group, and Task Force chairs,

The Technical Activities Division of the Transportation Research Board is engaged in a “strategic alignment” of its organizational structures and processes to strengthen their contribution to the mission of TRB and our parent organization, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Over the last year, much of the alignment effort has focused on reorganizing the TAD volunteer structure in ways that ensure that the talent of TRB’s thousands of volunteers can focus on 21st century critical, and emerging transportation issues with an organization that is flexible enough to respond to rapidly-changing circumstances. In short, we are developing a more sustainable organization that can retain the stability and continuity for which TRB is recognized internationally.

After a year of consultation with volunteers, sponsors, and staff, this effort has reached the stage at which TRB and the Technical Activities Council (TAC) is proudly able to release its newly aligned TAD volunteer structure. You can find the new structure and other resources, included updated Frequently Asked Questions, on our strategic alignment website at (http://www.trb.org/AboutTRB/TADStrategicAlignment.aspx ). Please feel free to share this link with your committee members. I encourage you to read the introductory letter and FAQs on this site to prepare for the questions you may get during the Annual Meeting.

In addition, there will be an all-chair event at the Annual Meeting to introduce the new structure, lay out the plans for the next year, and answer your questions. Here is the information for the event:

Sunday, January 12, 2020

10:00-11:00 am

Marriott Marquis, Salons 1 & 2

We realize that this late addition to the schedule means that some chairs will not have arrived at the meeting yet or will be involved in workshops. Please feel free to ask a committee member to represent you at this event if you are not able to attend.

As is said about many things, change is like a coin: it has two sides and you can’t have one without the other. Change can be difficult, uncertain, confusing—we don’t have all the answers to how it will work out. But change can also renew energy, spark innovation, and open up possibilities that were obscured by our familiarity with the things we have “always done.” This volunteer restructuring, and other elements of TAD’s strategic alignment, are sure to involve both sides of the change coin. We are committed to work together to minimize the difficult side; and we are confident that this community of dedicated and enthusiastic experts will quickly discover the energy, innovation, and possibilities offered by taking a fresh look at a century-old tradition of national service.

Thank you for all you do to make TRB’s mission a reality and to create this very special community.

Technical Activities Council
