Dear colleagues,

Please find below an important update from Tim Sexton (Chair, ADD40).

Dear TRB ADD40 Transportation Sustainability Committee Members and Friends,

Below are some updates about committee plans as we start to prepare for the 2020 Annual Meeting:

1.      We have issued a Call for Papers for the Aug. 1 2019 deadline for the 2020 TRB Annual Meeting — please see text below and forward along to research groups in your network.

·         “A Century of Progress?”

    • Riff on Office 2020 AM Theme: “Century of Progress”
    • Reflecting on achievements and issues related to transportation, while also asking hard questions about sustainability outcomes (equity, economy, environment)
    • E.g., bring the element of “humanity” to sustainability discussions, question of progress for whom, long term effects of changes to transportation system on people/workers/drivers/etc., themes similar to Andrew Yang’s book: “The War on Normal People”

·         Sustainability and New Transportation Technologies - linking to the 2020 Conference Theme:

o    New technologies and their environmental and social impacts

o    Policy implications of new transportation technologies and policy levers for promoting sustainability principles in new tech implementation.

·         Sustainability Research and Practice over Time

o    Where have we been, where are we going

o    How has discourse changed, along with the tools, methods and approaches we used, including how we predicted transportation/sustainability would change compared to reality.

·         Related: Eric Sundquist, Exec Director of the State Smart Transportation Institute (former Section chair), will be taking over for John MacArthur as the Paper Review chair.  John has done a terrific job coordinating paper review for a number of years and we are grateful for his support.  John will help Eric transition this year before officially stepping down.  Again, HUGE thanks to John and big welcome to Eric.

2.      TRB workshop ideas are due around June 7 to me and Ann Xu (Session Planning Chair) so we can work together to finalize them by the TRB deadline of June 14.  Workshops that encourage interaction between participants are encouraged.  Ideas suggested so far include the following:

·         End-of-life issues for EVs; environmental impacts related to materials disposal with a life cycle perspective and equity lens, who is affected and who benefits

·         Thursday Sustainability Wrap-up; follow-up/repeat of well attended workshops in 2016 and 2018

3.      The Sustainability and New Transportation Technologies Conference that was originally planned for May/June 2020 has been pushed to a likely fall 2020 date.  TRB staff will lead organizing and should reach out soon to those who have volunteered to help organize.  This is a joint conference with ADB20: Committee on Effects of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on Travel Choice.

4.      We can support TRB-sponsored webinars through help planning and marketing — feel free to suggest a topic and let me know if you want to work with ADD40 to host/co-host.

Please continue to check our committee website for updates and information https://www.trbsustainability.org/.
