The 2018 TRB Annual Meeting (January 7-11, 2018) is right around the corner and we have many activities planned that have now been given room assignments and time slots. The details are below.
AT040 Committee on the Transportation of Hazardous Materials (MONDAY 1/8/2018 8:00AM – 12:00PM, Congress (M4), Marriott Marquis)
In addition to administrative business and roundtable discussions the Committee meeting will also feature the following presentations:
- Simulating and Analyzing Hazardous Materials Transportation Network Under Emergency Accidents
- Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Radioactive Source Seeking
- Safely Transporting Hazardous Liquids and Gases in a Changing U.S. Energy Landscape

Session 371 Hazardous Materials Transportation Research (MONDAY 1/8/2018 1:30PM – 3:15PM, 149, Convention Center)
This session will include four (4) paper presentations:
- Train-Level and Tank Car-Level Modeling of Hazardous Materials Release in Railroad Incidents
- Developing an Empirical Pipeline and Rail Crude Oil Freight Demand Model
- Investigations of United States Rail-Based Crude Oil Incidents-Types and Consequences of Crude Oil Releases
- Comparative Risks of Transporting Hazardous Materials by Unit Train and Manifest Train
Session 437 Risk Management and Hazardous Materials Transportation (MONDAY 1/8/2018 3:45PM – 5:30PM, 144A, Convention Center)
This session explores best practices for applying safety risk management (SRM) within the hazardous materials transportation industry. The SRM process includes hazard identification, system analysis, risk analysis and assessment, and risk mitigations and controls. One of the major challenges in effectively applying SRM is risk perception and its impact on risk assessments. Risk assessments are often constrained by the public’s perception of the risk regardless of the true quantitative risk. The session will include presentations on hazard identification, risk assessments, risk perception, and risk communication with a view toward advancing best practices within industry.
