Hi -- I am writing as chair of AME00(1), the Transportation History Subcommittee. Our subcommittee had planned to convene a memorial sessions at the 2022 Annual Meeting to honor the memory and contributions of Marty Wachs, who died in April 2021, but because of the varying circumstances and constraints of that year (and the next) due to COVID restrictions and precautions, it was not possible. While there have already been memorials to honor Marty at his academic homes of UCLA and Berkeley, the History Subcommittee still wants to fulfill its intention to organize a memorial at a TRB Annual Meeting, because we believe it is important and worthwhile to give specific attention to Marty's long, varied, and consequential career as a researcher, leader, and mentor beneath the TRB umbrella.
Along with his many years as a member and leader of a varied group of TRB standing committees, Marty also led research teams that developed several major TRB special reports, and I am contacting you as chairs of AEP60 Transportation Demand because of your committee's topical connection with one of these reports, SR 242 "Curbing Gridlock: Peak Period Fees to Relieve Traffic Congestion."
Please let me know if you, or a member or friend of AEP60 would be interested in speaking during the memorial sessions about the significance and value of Marty's active TRB history for the facets of transportation research that are your committee's concern.
I looked forward to hearing from you. I am happy to answer any questions and to work with you on this in any way.
Thanks for your time and attention.
David Ballard
