Dear Members and Friends,
To whet your appetite for the 2010 Joint Summer Meeting, where the issues of highway funding will again be on the table, I want to refer you to an article that appears in the March-April 2010 issue of TR News, the bimonthly magazine of the TRB.  The article is co-authored by a member of the Trucking Industry Research committee, along with the CEO of Maverick USA (a primarily flatbed motor carrier) and former member of the TRB Executive Committee.

Williams, Steve, and Daniel C. Murray. 2010. "The Creative Financing Sidestep." TR NEWS:pp 27-30.

Anybody who knows Dan will know that he is hardly an ideological proponent of "big government" or raising taxes, but he and his co-author nicely articulates the case for higher fuel taxes (which really are user fees) to pay for the upgrading of our highway infrastructure.  I am sure this will contribute to a lively debate on these issues at the meeting in Minneapolis.
